Research conducted by scientists at the University of Bath has unveiled startling statistics: 13% of 1,923 confiscated vapes from schools across England contained spice, with numbers soaring to 25% in areas like London and Lancashire. Alarmingly, when examining vapes labelled as THC, CBD, or cannabis by the drug-testing service Wedinos, it was found that nearly 40% contained spice.
The Social Media Influence
Chris Pudney, a professor of applied biochemistry at the University of Bath, highlights the accessibility of these dangerous vapes on major social media platforms, which are immensely popular among youth. A recent ITV feature revealed the harrowing story of a 12-year-old boy who became addicted to spice vapes he purchased online for just £10, eventually landing him in a coma after suffering a collapsed lung.
Pudney has estimated that about 68% of vapes bought through TikTok are likely to contain spice, compared to 12% from Facebook. The ease with which young people can obtain these products online, often under the guise of legitimate cannabis vapes, underscores a serious public health challenge.
The Health Risks of Spice
The term “spice” refers to a variety of synthetic cannabinoids that can cause severe psychological and physical effects. Pudney warns that while spice may not carry the same immediate lethality as substances like heroin or fentanyl, it can still lead to psychosis, aggressive behaviour, and even cardiac arrest. The effects can appear abruptly and intensely, leaving users incapacitated and at risk of serious accidents.
Spice is not a singular drug but rather a collection of substances that interact with the brain’s cannabinoid receptors more aggressively than natural cannabis. This results in a much more potent and hazardous experience. In fact, evidence suggests that the likelihood of requiring emergency medical treatment for spice use is 30 times greater than that for skunk, a high-potency variant of cannabis.
A Growing Addiction Crisis

Pudney notes that spice is particularly addictive, often leading to desperate behaviour, including theft from family members. However, many youths now seem less concerned about potential risks, often purchasing whatever is available with the hope that it is safe.

Current testing methods for vapes remain inadequate, with local facilities unable to accurately determine the contents without sending samples to laboratories. While some young people have attempted to use cheap urine tests to identify spice, Pudney emphasises that these products are not reliable.
