Between May 1 and July 21, Quebec has reported 140 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, a sharp increase from the 40 cases documented during the same period last year. This intestinal illness, caused by the parasite Cyclospora, is typically transmitted through contaminated food or water. Symptoms include watery diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, gas, and loss of appetite.
Dr. Vinh emphasised the need for vigilance at the medical and public health levels, stating, “This is a real and substantial increase that deserves our attention.” He reassured citizens that there is no immediate cause for alarm, urging them to focus on informed decision-making rather than fear.

Cyclospora is not a common gastrointestinal infection transmitted from person to person. The current increase in cases has been largely linked to international travel, particularly to Mexico, as indicated by a spokesperson from the provincial health ministry. Despite the rise in cases, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has confirmed that no current outbreaks of cyclosporiasis are under investigation in the country. This year, the majority of Quebec cases are related to travel, highlighting the need for greater awareness of food safety.

The doctor also pointed out that the surge in cases could reflect underlying weaknesses in food safety surveillance systems. For those worried about contamination, he recommends thoroughly washing produce under running water. “If there’s something that’s being recalled, don’t test your luck; just get rid of it,” he said. “But if it’s not being recalled, we’re not living in hermetically sealed bubbles—go ahead and enjoy your fruits and vegetables.”
