Rising Threat of Brain-Eating Amoeba Detected in US National Parks

A dangerous organism known as Naegleria fowleri, often referred to as a “brain-eating amoeba,” has been found in several popular national parks across the United States. Recent testing revealed that this lethal amoeba is present in approximately one-third of water samples taken from sites such as Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks this summer. Authorities urge the public to exercise caution in freshwater environments.

Warnings from Experts

The U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with partner agencies, conducted an extensive study sampling 185 locations across various parks, including Olympic National Park and Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Alarmingly, samples from Lake Mead, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton contained the highest levels of contamination. Millions of visitors flock to these locations each year, raising concerns about potential exposure and infection.

Dr. Lyssette Cardona, an infectious disease specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Florida, emphasised that Naegleria fowleri is a free-living amoeba typically found in warm freshwater. “It can thrive in lakes, rivers, and even in poorly maintained pools,” she stated. To safeguard against infection, she recommends avoiding submerging your head in warm bodies of water, particularly hot springs, and suggests holding your nose when jumping into fresh waters.

Understanding the Infection

Infections occur when contaminated water enters the nose, allowing the amoeba to travel to the brain, leading to a severe condition known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Symptoms often start with fever, headaches, and nausea, escalating rapidly to hallucinations, seizures, and potential coma. Dr. Cardona highlighted the urgency of early intervention, noting that “97 percent of individuals diagnosed with PAM unfortunately do not survive.”

While cases of PAM are rare in the U.S., with only about 10 reported annually, the fatality rate is alarmingly high. From 1962 to 2024, there were 167 documented cases, predominantly affecting young males, with only four survivors.

The Impact of Climate Change

Experts warn that climate change is exacerbating the risk of Naegleria fowleri infections. The amoeba thrives in warmer water conditions, which are becoming increasingly prevalent due to rising global temperatures. Research from the CDC suggests that as water temperatures increase during summer months, the amoeba is migrating northward, reaching areas like the Midwest and Minnesota for the first time.

“Rising air temperatures directly contribute to higher water temperatures in lakes and ponds, creating a conducive environment for Naegleria fowleri,” the CDC stated. Fortunately, the amoeba does not pose a risk through ingestion of water or from contact with infected individuals, and it cannot be transmitted through aerosol droplets.

As summer heats up, it is essential for park-goers to remain vigilant. Experts recommend several precautionary measures, including avoiding warm freshwater bodies, especially during times of low water levels, and ensuring swimming pools are adequately maintained and disinfected.
