Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic amoeba that thrives in warm freshwater environments such as lakes, rivers, and even inadequately maintained swimming pools. According to Dr. Lyssette Cardona, an infectious disease specialist at Cleveland Clinic Florida, the amoeba poses a significant risk when contaminated water enters the body through the nose, leading to a severe brain infection known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).
The symptoms of PAM can escalate rapidly, beginning with headaches, fever, and nausea before progressing to confusion, hallucinations, and seizures. Alarmingly, the fatality rate for PAM is exceptionally high, with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting that 97 per cent of those affected do not survive. The rapid onset of the disease means that those infected can fall into a coma and face death within just five days.
