A concerning health alert has emerged as the brain-eating amoeba, known scientifically as Naegleria fowleri, has been detected in the recreational waters of several national parks across the United States. This year, samples taken from multiple locations—including Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Olympic National Park, Newberry National Volcanic Monument, and Lake Mead—revealed that roughly one-third of them harboured this dangerous organism, according to the U.S. Geological Survey and associated research teams.
Locations of Concern
The findings indicate that Lake Mead, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone are particularly affected, raising alarms as millions flock to these parks each year. The presence of Naegleria fowleri in these popular destinations poses a significant risk to unsuspecting visitors, especially as the summer months approach and outdoor activities increase.
Dr. Lyssette Cardona, an infectious disease specialist at Cleveland Clinic Florida, stresses the importance of awareness. “Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic amoeba that thrives in fresh water, including lakes and rivers, as well as inadequately maintained swimming pools and water systems,” she noted.
How Infections Occur
Infections typically occur when contaminated water enters the body through the nose, leading to a severe condition called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). The symptoms of PAM can escalate rapidly, often presenting as fever, headaches, nausea, and confusion. If not addressed promptly, the infection can lead to hallucinations, seizures, and, ultimately, increased brain swelling.
Dr. Cardona emphasises the urgency of recognising symptoms early: “It’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention if you experience these signs after exposure to potentially contaminated water.” Alarmingly, statistics from the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlight that nearly 97 per cent of individuals diagnosed with PAM succumb to the illness, often within just a few days.
Climate Change and the Spread of Naegleria fowleri
Interestingly, experts also link the rise of Naegleria fowleri infections to climate change. Warmer air temperatures contribute to increased water temperatures in lakes and rivers, creating an optimal environment for the amoeba to flourish. A CDC study from 2021 noted that the amoeba is migrating from the southern U.S. into the Midwest and as far north as Minnesota. “As air temperatures rise, water temperatures in lakes, ponds, and other fresh waters also rise, creating more favourable conditions for Naegleria fowleri,” the CDC explained.
Preventative Measures
While the risk is real, visitors can take steps to protect themselves. Dr. Cardona advises against submerging one’s head in hot springs and recommends holding the nose before jumping into fresh water. Importantly, individuals cannot contract the amoeba through drinking contaminated water or from contact with others who are infected. Swimming in properly treated and maintained pools remains a safe option, as does enjoying outdoor activities with mindfulness of the water conditions.
