This pivotal site, known for its critical role in American history, is facing an urgent race against time as archaeologists strive to preserve artefacts that have remained buried for centuries.

Archaeological Significance of Jamestown

Sean Romo, director of archaeology for Jamestown Rediscovery, pauses his excavation as he uncovers a faint line in the sandy soil—potentially the outline of a gate. This discovery reflects the ongoing search for remnants of America’s earliest beginnings. Romo notes, “You can’t put a shovel in the ground without finding something.” Each scoop of earth reveals the layers of history that have shaped the nation.

Founded in 1607, Jamestown marks the site of the first permanent English settlement in North America. It was here that the first representative assembly met in 1619, and where Pocahontas married tobacco planter John Rolfe. The arrival of the first enslaved Africans also took place here, setting in motion a system of slavery that would profoundly impact the course of American history. Romo asserts, “For American history, it’s hard to have more of an impact than Jamestown. It all starts here. Without Jamestown, there is no modern United States.”

The Impact of Rising Sea Levels

Despite its historical importance, Jamestown is now under severe threat from environmental changes. Over the past century, sea levels around the site have risen approximately 1.6 feet, and projections indicate that they could rise an additional three feet or more by 2075. The James River is eroding the island, while expanding wetlands encroach from the opposite side, complicating the preservation efforts. Heavy rainfall and high tides frequently flood excavation sites, prompting Romo to emphasise the urgency of their work: “We do need to pick the pace up because we are under severe threat from climate change.”

The race against the encroaching waters has led archaeologists to employ ground-penetrating radar to identify what lies beneath the surface before excavation begins. This technology enables researchers to prioritise areas that are most vulnerable to flooding, effectively transforming each excavation into a delicate balance of preservation and urgency.

Coastal Erosion and National Implications

Jamestown’s plight is a microcosm of a broader crisis affecting coastal regions across the United States. The effects of climate change—primarily the burning of fossil fuels—are causing global temperatures to rise and ice sheets to melt, resulting in rising sea levels. According to Climate Central, a nonprofit news and science organisation, by 2050, around 2.5 million Americans and numerous significant historical sites could face severe flooding.

Rob Young, a coastal geologist at Western Carolina University, highlights the rapid changes in coastal landscapes, stating, “The map is changing… and climate change and rising sea levels are making that map change more quickly than it was 100 years ago.” The implications extend beyond archaeological sites; national parks are experiencing increased flooding, restricting visitor access, while historic forts and barrier islands face significant erosion.

Young points to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where homes are succumbing to the Atlantic’s relentless advance. While some structures, like the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, have been relocated inland, many historical landmarks cannot be moved. “We’re not gonna move Fort Sumter,” he remarks, emphasising the need for a national dialogue on which sites can be defended and which may need to be surrendered to the sea.

Urgent Action Required

In an effort to mitigate erosion at Jamestown, the sea wall established in 1902 has recently been reinforced with large boulders. While this measure may provide a temporary reprieve, Romo recognises that it is not a long-term solution. “If we do nothing, we’re gonna go from Jamestown Island to Jamestown Islands in the next 50 years. The time to act is now,” he insists, advocating for immediate action to protect this historical site for future generations.
