As climate change accelerates, one of the most significant sites in American history is facing an existential threat. Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in North America, is grappling with rising sea levels that risk washing away centuries of heritage. Archaeologists are racing against time to uncover and preserve the remnants of a pivotal past before the very ground beneath them succumbs to the encroaching waters.

A Groundbreaking Discovery

Sean Romo, the director of archaeology for Jamestown Rediscovery, recently halted his excavation upon noticing a subtle yet significant shift in the sandy earth. To the trained eye, this faint line could represent an important historical feature—a potential gate from a bygone era. “You can’t put a shovel in the ground without finding something,” Romo states, highlighting the site’s rich archaeological potential.

Jamestown holds an unparalleled place in American history. Established in 1607, it was here that the first representative assembly convened in 1619, where Pocahontas married tobacco planter John Rolfe, and where the first enslaved Africans were brought to the English colonies. Romo asserts the site’s importance: “For American history, it’s hard to have more of an impact than Jamestown. It all starts here. Without Jamestown, there is no modern United States.”

The Flooding Dilemma

Despite its historical significance, Jamestown is increasingly vulnerable to climate change. Over the past century, sea levels in the area have risen by approximately 1.6 feet, with projections suggesting an additional rise of three feet or more by 2075. The James River is steadily eroding the island’s shoreline, while expanding wetlands threaten from the opposite direction. Recent excavations frequently encounter flooding due to heavy rainfall and unusually high tides, complicating the delicate work of preservation.

Romo emphasises the urgency of their mission: “We always have to be meticulous. But we do need to pick the pace up because we are under severe threat from climate change. And the real big one for us is flooding.”

Technological Advances in Archaeology

To combat these challenges, researchers are employing ground-penetrating radar technology to identify archaeological features before excavation begins. This method allows them to focus on the most at-risk areas, making every dig a critical exercise in prioritising what to save.

Yet, Jamestown is not an isolated case; it serves as a striking representation of broader coastal issues facing the United States. According to Climate Central, a nonprofit organisation focused on climate science, an estimated 2.5 million Americans and many cherished historical sites could be severely impacted by coastal flooding by 2050.

The Changing Coastal Landscape

The implications of rising sea levels extend beyond archaeological sites. Coastal geologist Rob Young from Western Carolina University notes, “The map is changing… and climate change and rising sea levels are making that map change more quickly than it was 100 years ago.”

Visitor access to national parks is increasingly restricted due to flooded roads and parking areas, while historic forts are experiencing more frequent inundation. In North Carolina’s Outer Banks, homes are collapsing into the Atlantic as erosion accelerates, exemplifying the urgent need for adaptive strategies.

“Some landmarks, however, cannot simply be relocated,” Young warns, highlighting that decisions must be made about which historical sites can be defended and which may ultimately be lost. “The trick for us as a society is to care enough to admit that and have a good national conversation about what we do about it.”

A Fragile Future

Jamestown’s seawall, originally constructed in 1902, has recently been reinforced with large boulders to combat erosion. While this may provide temporary relief, Romo acknowledges it is not a long-term solution. “If we do nothing, we’re gonna go from Jamestown Island to Jamestown Islands in the next 50 years. The time to act is now,” he asserts, emphasising the need to protect this vital space for future generations.

As rising waters threaten to erase vital chapters of American history, it is imperative that society comes together to address the challenges posed by climate change. The time for action is now if we are to safeguard the narratives that have shaped our nation.
