In response to rising concerns from parents regarding its child safety protocols, Roblox has staunchly defended its expanded age verification system. The gaming platform, which boasts an impressive 144 million daily users globally, is implementing age-specific account types—Roblox Kids and Roblox Select—designed to tailor the user experience based on estimated ages. However, many parents are alarmed by reports of misclassifications that could compromise their children’s safety and limit parental controls.
Enhanced Safety Features or False Security?
Roblox’s latest initiative aims to enhance user safety by differentiating accounts based on age. The newly introduced features will control not only the content accessible to users but also their communication capabilities. Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s chief safety officer, explained that the age estimation technology, which leverages facial analysis, is now utilised by over half of their daily users, translating to tens of millions of individuals.
Kaufman asserts that the system typically estimates a user’s age within a margin of 1.4 years for those under 18. However, parents have voiced their frustration, highlighting instances where their children were wrongly classified as adults, potentially exposing them to greater risks. Kaufman contends that relying on self-reported ages is less reliable, as users may misrepresent their ages to gain access to features restricted by their actual age.
The Structure of New Accounts
The model for age-specific accounts is designed to provide age-appropriate experiences. Roblox Kids, tailored for younger users, features a simplified interface devoid of communication tools and limits access to a carefully curated selection of games. Meanwhile, Roblox Select, aimed at users aged nine to 15, permits limited communication and offers a broader, though still restricted, library of content.
Users who fail to complete the age verification process will find themselves restricted to children’s content, effectively barring them from any form of communication on the platform.
