Roblox is under scrutiny as it enhances its age verification system designed to bolster child safety on its platform. While the gaming giant, boasting 144 million daily users globally, aims to better protect young players, many parents are raising alarms about the accuracy of its user-age estimation technology, which they believe may misclassify children and inadvertently expose them to risks.
A New Approach to Age-Specific Accounts
The company’s latest initiative introduces two distinct account types: Roblox Kids and Roblox Select. These accounts will tailor the user experience based on a child’s estimated age, dictating the version of Roblox they can access, the content they encounter, and their communication capabilities. This system aims to create a safer environment by restricting interactions between minors and adults, as well as limiting the types of games accessible to younger users.
In an interview with BBC News, Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s chief safety officer, explained that the age estimation system employs facial analysis technology, currently utilised by over half the platform’s daily users. He noted that the system generally estimates a child’s age with an accuracy of about 1.4 years, either above or below the actual age. However, the company has yet to release data on the frequency of misclassifications, which has raised concerns among parents.
Addressing Parental Fears
Parents have voiced their worries, claiming that some children have been inaccurately identified as adults, leading to a reduction in the protective features available to them. Kaufman argues that relying on users to self-report their age is less reliable, stating, “When you ask them that simple question, users are going to tell you whatever they want to tell you in order to get access.”
Roblox’s existing security measures require users to pass an age check before being granted access to chat features, with the aim of minimising the risk of grooming and unwanted contact. The newly implemented approach expands age restrictions into account types, with Roblox Kids offering a simplified interface devoid of communication tools, while Roblox Select caters to users aged nine to 15 with limited communication and a curated content library. Users who do not complete the age verification process will find their access confined to children’s content, with no ability to communicate on the platform.

In an effort to ensure age-appropriate content, Roblox analyses various factors, including a game’s longevity on the platform and the behaviour of its developers. With over two million creators contributing to Roblox, the company seeks to maintain a safe environment by enforcing stringent suitability criteria for games, particularly those featuring social interactions.
Despite the platform’s safety initiatives, some developers have voiced concerns about the need for ongoing parental oversight. Kaufman has suggested that it is imprudent to allow the opinions of a few developers to overshadow the platform’s overall safety efforts. He acknowledged that while mistakes can happen during the age verification process, many issues arise from parents misunderstanding the protocol or inadvertently completing the checks for their children.
To further assist parents, Roblox provides options for resetting age checks, submitting appeals, or using ID verification to rectify errors. Additionally, parents will have the ability to manage direct messaging and restrict game access until their child reaches 16.

As the debate over child safety online intensifies, experts like Professor Sonia Livingstone from the London School of Economics have expressed cautious optimism regarding Roblox’s enhancements. However, she warned that significant risks remain, citing adult content and potential avenues for predatory behaviour on the platform. Livingstone insists that parents deserve assurance that moderation efforts are effective and that age checks are not exploited for commercial profiling.
Legislation is tightening globally, with the UK’s Online Safety Act set to impose new responsibilities on tech companies regarding child protection. As scrutiny intensifies, Roblox’s CEO, Dave Baszucki, has stated that it is ultimately up to parents to determine their comfort level with allowing their children to engage with the platform. Kaufman reiterated that the company’s prominence necessitates rigorous oversight, acknowledging that the demand for enhanced safety measures from parents and regulators is inevitable.
