In a bold tribute to Britain’s aviation heritage, Royal Mail has unveiled a new collection of stamps that celebrates the nation’s military jet aircraft. The set, comprising eight distinctive stamps, features legendary models such as the Gloster Meteor F1, the UK’s first jet fighter, alongside the contemporary Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II. This release not only highlights the evolution of British military aviation but also commemorates pivotal anniversaries in the field.
A Showcase of Aviation History
The new stamp collection spotlights eight iconic jet-powered aircraft that have played crucial roles in various conflicts, from World War II through to modern engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among the featured aircraft are the Avro Vulcan B2, Gloster Javelin FAW9, and the Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer S2B, each representing significant advancements in military aviation technology.
The stamps also commemorate key milestones in aviation history, marking 50 years since the Hawker Siddeley Hawk entered service, 70 years for both the Gloster Javelin and the Avro Vulcan, and an impressive 80 years since the de Havilland Vampire made its debut.
Honouring Pioneers of Aviation
In addition to the main set, a miniature sheet of four stamps pays homage to Sir Frank Whittle, the inventor of the jet engine, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of his passing. One of the stamps features a portrait of Whittle at his desk, symbolising his groundbreaking contributions to aviation.
His son, Ian Whittle, expressed pride in Royal Mail’s recognition of his father’s legacy, stating, “I am delighted that Royal Mail is celebrating this extraordinary legacy with a set of stamps. The complete set of 12 stamps is set to be available for general sale from July 30, with a presentation pack priced at £22.50.
