What Are They Up To?

While the specifics of the satellites’ mission remain unclear, analysts suggest that they could be part of Russia’s “inspector satellites” programme. This initiative potentially involves monitoring and testing other spacecraft in orbit. Notably, one of the satellites released a smaller object, dubbed Object F, which adds an element of intrigue to the operations.

Dean Sladen, an aerospace engineer at Accu Components, commented on the technical marvel of such manoeuvres. “From a precision-engineering perspective, this is genuinely impressive, but close-proximity operations are not unusual,” he explained. “Every crewed and cargo vehicle bound for the International Space Station performs similar manoeuvres, but the difference here is that it took place between two free-flying satellites without docking mechanisms or cooperative protocols.”

The Risk of Space Debris

The implications of this close encounter extend beyond mere fascination with engineering capabilities. The risk of space debris poses a significant concern, particularly in low Earth orbit, where nearly half of all tracked objects are non-functional debris. The Accu Components space debris report highlights the dangers inherent in such operations. A collision between satellites could trigger what is known as Kessler syndrome, a scenario where debris collides with other objects, creating a cascade of further collisions that could render entire regions of space perilous for future missions.

“Satellites in low Earth orbit travel at roughly 8 kilometres per second,” Sladen elaborated. “Everything has to be handled by onboard guidance systems running thousands of calculations a second, with manoeuvre decisions made autonomously in tight time frames. When that control loop works, the precision and granularity are extraordinary. However, a single miscalculation can transform two intact spacecraft into thousands of high-velocity fragments capable of disabling anything in their path.”
