A coalition of environmental experts and advocacy groups is sounding the alarm, warning that these ambitious projects could unleash catastrophic levels of pollution into Earth’s atmosphere. A recent petition has called for an immediate review of the environmental impacts of these initiatives, citing concerns that the consequences could be dire for both our planet and its inhabitants.

The Petition’s Alarm Bells

The coalition, which includes the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER), Earthjustice, and DarkSky International, has filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) urging a halt to new satellite datacentre licenses. Their argument rests on the assertion that the proposed projects do not adequately consider the environmental ramifications of releasing harmful pollutants into the stratosphere.

Experts fear that pollutants emitted during rocket launches and from decommissioned satellites could severely damage the ozone layer. The potential repercussions include increased ultraviolet radiation exposure for people on the ground and further destabilisation of an already fragile climate system. The petition criticises the tech giants for their grand claims about revolutionising space capabilities while ignoring the environmental costs.

The Growing Satellite Constellation

The advent of satellite datacentres is part of a broader trend in the tech industry. Currently, there are approximately 15,000 active satellites orbiting the Earth, a number that could swell to 100,000 within the next decade. Many of these satellites are part of the Starlink and Amazon’s ambitious broadband internet initiatives, which alone consist of around 10,000 satellites.

However, with each launch, a myriad of pollutants is released into the atmosphere. Emissions include black carbon, nitrogen oxides, and chlorine gases, alongside metals that pose unknown risks to Earth’s delicate atmospheric balance. Steve Volz, former head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s satellite office, has raised concerns over the feasibility of these orbital datacentres, noting that the environmental risk is substantial. “Even if they burn up, you do not want to be filling up the atmosphere with refuse from these any more than you would want it coming from a smoke stack,” he stated.

The Dark Side of Innovation

As the tech giants push forward with their plans, they face mounting opposition not just from environmentalists but also from the scientific community. Studies conducted in late 2023 revealed metals in the stratosphere that could interfere with natural processes regulating Earth’s temperature. These findings highlight a troubling lack of understanding regarding the interaction of spacecraft emissions and the stratospheric ecosystem.

Light pollution, another critical concern, is adversely affecting nocturnal wildlife, including fireflies and various insects. DarkSky International’s executive director, Ruskin Hartley, has emphasised the need for regulatory bodies like the FCC to take these environmental concerns seriously, asserting that the night sky could be permanently altered by the proliferation of satellites.

The petition argues that the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) mandates federal agencies, including the FCC, to assess the potential environmental impacts of satellite projects. Critics contend that the applications submitted by tech companies lack substantive environmental risk assessments, failing to address the cumulative effects of launching and operating millions of satellites.

Among those seeking permits is Cowboy Space Corporation, which aims to create a vast constellation of 20,000 satellites. Their FCC application mentions environmental mitigation only in vague terms, showcasing a trend across the industry of glossing over critical environmental concerns. Musk’s SpaceX has made bold claims regarding its orbital datacentres ensuring humanity’s multi-planetary future, yet it too has not provided adequate details on mitigating environmental risks.
