A new heat dome is on track to envelop a significant portion of the United States, bringing with it dangerously high temperatures that could affect more than 50 million people. From Texas to North Dakota, forecasters warn of oppressive conditions as a relentless wave of heat sweeps across the central U.S. this weekend and into the coming week.

A Heat Wave in Full Swing

As the summer season reaches its peak, many areas are already grappling with extreme heat. In Texas, heat index values are soaring above 105 degrees Fahrenheit, prompting the National Weather Service to issue urgent heat advisories. The situation is mirrored in Oklahoma, where residents are also bracing for sweltering conditions.

“Currently, a substantial heat dome has settled over Texas and the interior Southwest,” noted Alex Sosnowski, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather. “Dallas recorded temperatures of 100 degrees on Monday, escalating to 106 on both Tuesday and Wednesday, with similar highs expected to persist into early next week.”

The Expanding Heat Dome

The impending heat dome is not confined to Texas. States in the northern-central region, including Kansas and Nebraska, have experienced brief respite from the heat, but the forecast suggests that scorching air will soon return. Missouri, the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wyoming are all set to experience temperatures soaring past the century mark.

While areas in the Midwest and Great Lakes may see slightly cooler temperatures in the 80s and 90s, any temperature surpassing 80 degrees poses a risk to public health, according to the National Weather Service’s Heat Index. Critical danger levels arise once temperatures exceed 103 degrees Fahrenheit.

This event follows two previous heat domes that wreaked havoc earlier in the month, resulting in train delays due to buckling tracks and the cancellation of Fourth of July celebrations. July is traditionally the hottest month of the year, yet this increasing intensity and duration of heat waves can largely be attributed to human-induced climate change, as highlighted by analyses from Climate Central.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has also stated that climate change is making the occurrence of heat domes not only more frequent but also more severe. As such, the implications for public health and infrastructure cannot be overstated.

The Human Toll of Extreme Heat

Heat is already recognised as the leading weather-related killer in the United States, accounting for approximately 2,000 fatalities annually, according to research from Yale University. The physiological effects of extreme heat can be insidious, stressing organ functions and forcing the heart to work harder to circulate blood.

In light of these dangers, experts strongly recommend that individuals stay indoors during peak heat hours, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, remain hydrated, and utilise cooling centres when available. “Even routine outdoor activities may become hazardous during the hottest part of the day,” Sosnowski cautioned. “Limit strenuous activity during midday and afternoon hours, seek shade or air conditioning when possible, and drink plenty of fluids to mitigate the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.”
