With forecasts predicting temperatures soaring between 95°F to 105°F (35°C to 40°C), some areas, particularly in the south-western deserts, could see temperatures spike to a blistering 120°F (48°C).

The impending heatwave is set to stretch from the Gulf of Mexico coast, through the Great Plains, and into the midwest. Meteorologists warn that this intense heat will be sustained due to a high-pressure system, commonly referred to as a heat dome. This phenomenon effectively traps heat over a large area, creating oppressive conditions that can last for days, if not weeks.
As the weekend progresses, forecasts indicate that regions in western Nebraska will face extreme heat warnings, with temperatures projected to hit 108°F (42°C). The National Weather Service has flagged these conditions as particularly hazardous, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, pregnant individuals, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
The Climate Crisis Worsens
While heatwaves are a familiar part of American summers, the frequency and intensity of these events are escalating alarmingly, a direct consequence of human-induced climate change. The relentless emissions of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels have led to a significant rise in global temperatures, with this summer already marked by record-breaking heat in various states.
Earlier in July, a previous heat dome forced the cancellation of Independence Day celebrations in the eastern United States. Following that, another wave of extreme temperatures gripped the west, seeing areas like Montana record a staggering 115°F (46°C).
As the latest heat dome intensifies, areas like Denver could see temperature records shattered, further underscoring the urgent need for climate action.

The extreme heat is not confined to the United States. Europe is also grappling with dangerously high temperatures, with 250,000 people evacuated due to wildfires raging across Spain and France. A separate heatwave in June has been linked to an estimated 5,700 fatalities in France alone. The UK is experiencing its own challenges, with hot, dry conditions leading to increased fire risks across the landscape.
In total, 88 fires are currently being fought by firefighters across the US, highlighting the growing threat posed by climate-induced disasters.
