The government claimed that the datacentre would be powered entirely by on-site renewable energy, aiming for completion by 2030. However, internal communications obtained through freedom of information requests have cast doubt on these assurances, revealing that both the government and project developers privately acknowledged the site’s “power provision issue.”

Despite the optimistic projections of generating up to 1GW of renewable energy, the reality is far more concerning. Responses from the government suggest that the complex will need to connect to the national grid, potentially facing delays from a lengthy queue of other projects in need of connection. A government spokesperson reassured that the site’s energy needs could still be met predominantly through renewable sources, yet skepticism remains about the feasibility of these claims.

The Energy Infrastructure Challenge

This would surpass the output of Whitelee, the UK’s largest onshore wind farm, and provide enough energy for approximately 800,000 Scottish homes. However, a closer examination reveals a significant gap between intention and reality.

Currently, DataVita operates two smaller datacentres, which draw a mere 25MW from the grid. There is no evidence that the company possesses the land or infrastructure necessary to meet its ambitious energy generation targets. Analyses suggest that fulfilling its renewable energy claims would require between 40 and 100 square kilometres of land, yet DataVita currently has planning applications covering only about 2 square kilometres.

While DataVita’s parent company, HfD Group, has proposed an “energy park” featuring up to 19 wind turbines, this would only provide a fraction of the energy required. In response to inquiries, DataVita stated that its energy strategy would rely on new renewable generation and intelligent connections to Scotland’s electricity system, but many remain unconvinced.

The Lanarkshire datacentre is part of the UK’s broader initiative to develop designated AI growth zones. These zones are meant to ensure that projects have a realistic pathway to self-sufficiency in energy. However, the Guardian’s investigation indicates that the Lanarkshire site may lack the required grid connection and that its plans for independent energy generation are not grounded in reality.

Scotland’s first minister, John Swinney, has acknowledged the power provision challenges and stressed the importance of engaging with the UK government to secure timely grid connections. However, internal communications suggest that prior to the public announcement of the project, officials were considering the possibility of using gas to meet energy needs—a move that would contradict commitments to renewable energy.
