In a significant development within the Canadian Armed Forces, the senior leadership of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), has been temporarily removed from their posts while an investigation is underway. The Department of National Defence (DND) confirmed this decision, which raises questions regarding the conduct of those in military leadership roles.
Command Team Under Review
Lieutenant-Colonel Jason Hudson, the Commanding Officer, and Chief Warrant Officer Kim Doerr have both been suspended from their command positions based in Edmonton. The DND’s spokesperson, Andrée-Anne Poulin, indicated that the investigation pertains to issues of conduct, although specific details about the incidents leading to this action have not been disclosed.
“Members of the Canadian Armed Forces, particularly those holding positions of authority, are required to demonstrate sound judgment and exemplary conduct,” Poulin stated. This expectation is critical for maintaining public confidence and trust within the ranks.
In the interim, Major Caleb Kimball and Master Warrant Officer Timothy Wiebe have been appointed to lead the battalion. Their immediate task will be to ensure continuity and operational effectiveness while the investigation is conducted.

Daniel Blouin, another DND spokesperson, clarified that, to date, there is no criminal investigation associated with this review, nor is there any military police involvement. The inquiry will be managed by the leadership of the 3rd Canadian Division, one of the Canadian Army’s four operational commands, which oversees military activities throughout Western Canada, stretching from the Pacific coast to Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The review is specifically being conducted by the 3rd Canadian Division Support Group, which is responsible for various logistical and personnel operations, including infrastructure and training facilities. Blouin refrained from providing further insights into the circumstances surrounding the leadership’s removal, emphasising the necessity of respecting individual rights during the ongoing process. “As this process remains ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further,” he said.

Lieutenant-Colonel Hudson took command of the 3rd Battalion in June 2024. This unit has a storied history, having been the first conventional Canadian combat force deployed to Afghanistan in early 2002, marking Canada’s return to combat operations since the Korean War.
