Toronto police announced on Thursday that 55-year-old Dela Cruz, who worked in the hospital’s housekeeping department, has been charged with five counts, including accessing child sexual abuse materials and luring a minor through telecommunications. Following the charges, SickKids took immediate action, placing Dela Cruz on leave and confirming his subsequent resignation.
In a statement, Ronald Cohn, president and chief executive of SickKids, expressed his profound disappointment, stating, “The conduct described in the charges is completely unacceptable and runs contrary to our core values.” He emphasised the hospital’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its patients and staff, highlighting the violation of trust such allegations entail.
Third-Party Investigation Initiated
In response to this alarming situation, SickKids has enlisted KPMG, a well-known auditing firm, to conduct a thorough review of its human resources and IT governance. This initiative comes as the Toronto Police Service’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit began investigating Dela Cruz in October 2024. Investigators allege that he engaged in inappropriate communications with a 15-year-old, sending explicit messages and images via social media and mobile chat applications. Following a search warrant executed last week, several electronic devices and written documents were seized from his possession.

The troubling news does not end with Dela Cruz. Just weeks prior, on July 21, another SickKids staff member, Dilan Dissanayake, a 44-year-old rheumatologist, was arrested and charged with possessing and accessing child sexual abuse materials. The hospital has stated that, to their knowledge, Dela Cruz and Dissanayake did not have any professional relationship. However, the overlapping nature of these cases has left many patients and their families shaken.
