Significant Reduction in Amazon Fires Offers Hope Amid Ongoing Environmental Challenges

In a promising turn of events for Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, the area devastated by fires in 2025 has plummeted dramatically compared to the previous year. The deforestation monitoring organisation MapBiomas has reported that 3.1 million hectares were scorched last year, a stark contrast to the alarming 15.8 million hectares burned in 2024. This reduction marks the smallest area burned since MapBiomas began its records in 1985, presenting a ray of hope for environmental advocates.

A Welcome Decline

The report from MapBiomas indicates a significant drop in fire activity across the Amazon, aligning with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s campaign promise to protect the rainforest. The figures are likely to serve as a boost for Lula’s re-election bid in October. The Amazon endured its most severe fire season in over two decades during 2024, attributed to a combination of extreme weather and human-induced factors, as noted by the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

Vera Arruda, a researcher at the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) and co-ordinator at MapBiomas, highlighted the importance of these findings. “The 2025 figures are significant and show that it is possible to reduce the burned area in the country,” she told the BBC. Despite the hopeful news, Arruda cautioned against complacency, emphasising that while the 31% decrease from historical averages is encouraging, it does not yet confirm a lasting trend nor warrant a reduction in prevention measures.

The MapBiomas report reveals that the decline in fire activity is not confined to the Amazon. In total, about 12.7 million hectares were burned across Brazil in 2025, down from 30 million in 2024. This substantial reduction reflects a broader trend of decreased fire activity, influenced by the cooler La Niña weather patterns that prevailed, contrasting sharply with the warmer El Niño conditions that fuelled the catastrophic fires the previous year.

Historically, the highest incidence of land burned across Brazil occurred in 2007, when 30.7 million hectares were affected. The recent figures, while encouraging, must be viewed in the context of ongoing threats. MapBiomas warns that the return of El Niño could extend the dry season this year, thereby heightening the risk of forest fires.

The Fight for the Amazon’s Future

The Amazon rainforest is vital for maintaining global biodiversity and regulating Earth’s climate by sequestering carbon dioxide. However, it faces relentless pressures from agriculture, logging, and climate change, all of which contribute to the proliferation of fires. When Lula took office in January 2023, he vowed to reverse the deforestation policies of his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, who had prioritised agricultural expansion and mining, leading to a 75% increase in tree loss during his term.

While Lula’s commitment to achieving zero deforestation was met with approval from environmentalists, his recent approval of oil exploration near the Amazon river mouth has sparked criticism. Activists argue that such decisions undermine his promises to safeguard the Amazon.
