In a remarkable achievement, Scottish singer-songwriter Jacob Alon has been crowned the winner of the prestigious Brit Critics’ Choice Award. The Fife-born musician emerged victorious, outshining fellow nominees Sienna Spiro and Rose Gray, known for her infectious dance-pop sound.

Formerly known as the Brit Rising Star award, this accolade celebrates the most promising up-and-coming talents, as selected by a panel of industry experts. A shocked but elated Jacob described the win as “bonkers” when the news was announced on BBC Radio 1’s New Music Show.

The non-binary artist, who uses they/them pronouns, admitted they never expected to reach such dizzying heights, stating they didn’t think they were “Brit material.” However, the critics clearly saw the exceptional potential in Jacob’s captivating storytelling and unique musical style.

Jacob’s journey to this triumph has been far from straightforward. After a difficult stint at university and a turbulent period in London, the musician found their footing in Edinburgh’s vibrant folk scene. This genre’s influence can be heard in Jacob’s debut album, “In Limerence,” which explores the complexities of failed romantic relationships.

The singer-songwriter expressed their disbelief at the recognition, saying, “When I started making this album, when I write songs, it’s so far away from any of this stuff and I never would have expected it to get this far.” Jacob added, “It feels like I’m getting away with something that I shouldn’t be getting away with.”

Jacob’s rise to prominence was further cemented by a standout performance on Jools Holland’s BBC 2 show in November 2024, which came after the release of just one single, “Fairy in a Bottle.” The soulful track, performed barefoot in a pair of golden-feathered trousers and a red shawl, captivated audiences and paved the way for Jacob’s debut album last May.

The Brit Critics’ Choice Award, in partnership with BBC Radio 1, has reverted to its original name this year to emphasise the importance of critical acclaim for artists in the early stages of their careers. Jacob’s victory makes them the first Scottish act to be named BBC Introducing Artist of the Year, further solidifying their status as a rising star in the industry.

The Brit Awards ceremony will take place live from Manchester’s Co-op Live on Saturday, 28 February, where Jacob Alon’s triumph will be celebrated on the national stage.
