Spotted Lanternflies Threaten US Vineyards: A Growing Battle Against Invasive Pests

The rise of the spotted lanternfly population in the United States poses a significant threat to vineyards and forestry, particularly from Virginia to New York. These invasive pests, which have wreaked havoc on grape yields, are forcing growers to adopt drastic measures, with some simply resorting to squashing the insects to protect their crops.

An Unwelcome Arrival

Three years ago, at Zephaniah Farm Vineyard in Leesburg, Virginia, an employee noticed a striking yet troubling sight: insects resembling a small, colourful moth, with grey and black wings and bright red underwings, perched atop the trees. Initially appealing, these pests quickly turned into unwelcome invaders, as they began to drain the vineyard’s grapevines. Co-owner and viticulturist Tremain Hatch reported a staggering 50% drop in grape production in 2025 compared to the previous year. “If we spend as much time farming the grapes but we have half the crop and we’re able to make half the wine, that is not a good thing,” Hatch lamented.

Economic Implications for Winemakers

Zephaniah Farm Vineyard is not an isolated case; the proliferation of spotted lanternflies has been felt across the United States, adversely affecting the winemaking and forestry sectors. In New York, estimates suggest that the economic impact on wineries could reach millions of dollars. With the population of these pests steadily increasing, researchers are bracing for a challenging summer and autumn ahead, as they seek effective strategies to protect both vegetation and the vital wine industry.

The spotted lanternfly, native to China, was first detected in Pennsylvania in 2014 and has since spread to 19 states and Washington D.C. The US Department of Agriculture reported in August 2025 that infestations are particularly severe in the northeast. Nathan Derstine, a visiting assistant professor of biology at the University of Richmond, explained, “It’s pretty common with invasive insects that if they get established in a new place, they are not constrained by some of their natural enemies that were in their native range, so here they have expanded quite rapidly.”

These pests feed on the sap of various plants, including grapevines, hops, and fruit trees, and their excretions can lead to the growth of sooty mould on grapes—an outcome that is detrimental to both harvest quality and marketability.

Community Efforts and Solutions

David All, an arborist, has observed the escalating presence of lanternflies during his walks in Upper Arlington, Ohio. He notes that a harsh winter following a summer infestation can lead to significant tree damage. For homeowners and vineyard operators alike, the solution is straightforward: eliminate the pests. “It might be a little messy, but it will save your tree,” All advised.

The methods of control extend beyond mere squashing. Brian Walsh, a horticulture educator at Penn State Extension, emphasises the importance of individual action in curbing the spread of these invasive insects. “They don’t belong in our environment,” he stated. He encouraged vigilance, asserting that each lanternfly killed reduces the risk of inadvertently transporting them to new areas.

In response to the infestation, organisations like Cleveland Metroparks have taken proactive measures. Adam Regula, the parks’ climate-resilient forest manager, noted the strategic removal of “trees of heaven,” the preferred host plant for lanternflies, while also deploying trained volunteers to identify and destroy egg masses.

Grappling with Management Challenges

As late summer approaches, vineyard owners find themselves in a precarious position. Drew Harner, an assistant professor of viticulture at Virginia Tech, highlighted the challenges posed by adult lanternflies as they invade growing areas just as grapes begin to ripen. The use of insecticides is often limited due to impending harvests, creating a frustrating cycle where even reduced lanternfly populations can quickly rebound.

In an effort to combat this relentless cycle, scientists are exploring innovative strategies, such as introducing parasitoids from East Asia that can effectively target lanternfly nymphs and eggs, alongside applying fungal spores to infect and eliminate the pests. Vineyard owners are also removing trees of heaven as part of their defensive tactics.

While the lanternfly invasion is alarming, experts like Derstine believe the potential damage may not reach the catastrophic levels seen with other invasive species, such as the emerald ash borer, which has devastated ash tree populations. “This is a recent invasion,” he pointed out. “It’s been about 12 years. That is not very long in the grand scheme of things.”

Community Actions Bring Hope

Rather than waiting for nature to take its course, Virginia vineyard owners have initiated community engagement through events like “Scrape for the Grape.” This initiative encourages volunteers to remove lanternfly egg masses, with Zephaniah Farm recently hosting around 60 volunteers over two days. “When there is a new pest and we are not sure how to manage it, it’s very uncomfortable and scary,” Hatch acknowledged. “To have community members come out and help us, that means a lot.”
