Sri Lanka is confronting its most severe dengue fever outbreak in nearly a decade, with the disease claiming 56 lives and resulting in over 77,000 reported cases since the beginning of the year. In an unprecedented move, the government has mobilised military drones to assist in controlling mosquito populations, a critical step given the outbreak’s rapid escalation and its potential to strain an already beleaguered public health system.
Military Assistance in Public Health Crisis
The Sri Lankan government, under the leadership of Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has formed a special monitoring unit within the military to combat the outbreak. This initiative comes as health officials have identified 162 areas across the nation as high-risk zones for dengue transmission. Particularly affected is the capital, Colombo, which has recorded the highest incidence of infections.
Health experts attribute the current surge to a more aggressive strain of the virus, primarily the DENV-2 variant. This strain is known for its rapid spread and increased severity, which has raised alarms among health authorities, who are keen to avoid a repeat of the catastrophic 2017 outbreak that resulted in over 186,000 infections and approximately 450 deaths.
Emergency Response Measures in Place
In response to the alarming rate of infection, the Sri Lankan government has implemented a variety of measures designed to mitigate mosquito breeding. The air force drones are being deployed to locate stagnant water sources, which serve as breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes. Concurrently, police teams have been tasked with inspecting residential areas, construction sites, and schools to eliminate potential breeding sites.
Hospitals are experiencing a significant influx of patients, with more than 18,000 cases reported in just the first two weeks of July. To cope with this surge, medical facilities have expanded their capacity by adding beds, establishing special wards, and extending medical staff hours.
Public health experts have cited Cyclone Ditwah, which struck the island in December, as a contributing factor to the outbreak. The cyclone’s aftermath left behind debris and pools of stagnant water, creating optimal conditions for mosquito breeding. “The environment has been littered with debris, leading to increased mosquito populations,” explained Prashila Samaraweera, a consultant community physician with the National Dengue Control Unit.
Resources Strained Amidst Economic Hardship
The dengue outbreak comes at a time when Sri Lanka is grappling with the effects of a significant economic downturn, which has exacerbated the strain on public health resources. The nation of 22 million is still recovering from the economic crisis triggered in 2022, which resulted in widespread protests and a change in government. The ongoing energy shortages, influenced by geopolitical tensions, have further complicated the country’s recovery efforts.
Kapila Kannangara, acting director general of the dengue unit, expressed concern about the current state of healthcare: “Our public health workers are stretched to their limits. The severity of the cases we are seeing is alarming.” Nearly 75% of the current dengue cases are linked to the DENV-2 strain, which has demonstrated a tendency for rapid transmission.
Preventative Measures and Community Engagement
Health officials remain cautiously optimistic that the monsoon rains may abate the outbreak in the coming weeks. However, they warn that a resurgence is likely with the onset of further rainfall in November. Authorities have already initiated a clean-up campaign in the worst-hit areas, removing around 11,000 dengue breeding sites and imposing fines on over 4,000 properties found to harbour mosquito larvae.
Medical professionals are urging those with mild symptoms to self-isolate at home to alleviate pressure on hospitals overwhelmed by patient numbers. Shalini Aloka Perera, a young patient managing her recovery at home, shared, “The doctor advised me to stay home as my platelet count was stable. The hospitals are too crowded.”
The symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headaches, and joint pain, with serious cases potentially leading to hospitalization. The government is also exploring the possibility of introducing a dengue vaccine, although public health experts caution that its effectiveness may be limited given the virus’s complexity and the presence of multiple strains.
