The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has announced the continuation of its “move along” order across its transit network until April 30, 2027. This initiative, introduced to bolster safety in the metro system, allows special constables to intervene in instances where facilities are misused for activities beyond transit purposes. The STM reports that this measure has significantly improved safety and overall conditions within the metro.
Impact of the Order on Safety
Since its implementation in mid-March 2025, the “move along” order has been invoked nearly 2,500 times each month, particularly during the winter months. The STM cites operational data indicating a positive trend in various safety metrics since the order’s introduction. For instance, service reliability has improved, with a noticeable decline in interruptions caused by disruptive behaviour.
According to STM statistics, from November 2025 to March 2026, there was a remarkable 36 per cent reduction in the number of individuals escorted from stations at closing time compared to the previous year. Additionally, those needing to be escorted out during operational hours saw a slight decrease of two per cent. This reduction is indicative of a more secure environment for both passengers and staff.
Decline in Incidents and Improved Conditions
The STM’s analysis reveals that interventions by special constables for incivility also decreased by two per cent, while assaults on employees remained stable. Furthermore, the agency reported a significant 22 per cent drop in service interruptions lasting five minutes or more due to disruptive behaviour.
Aref Salem, the STM board chair, emphasised the importance of enhancing the sense of safety to attract more riders. He reassured the public that the “move along” order is just one aspect of a comprehensive strategy aimed at refining security measures throughout the network.
Future Plans for Security Enhancements
Looking ahead, the STM plans to continue assessing and refining its safety protocols to ensure that the metro remains a secure mode of transportation for all users. The agency is committed to exploring further initiatives that can improve the overall experience for riders, ensuring that the metro is not only a convenient means of travel but also a safe one.
In light of these developments, community engagement and feedback will play crucial roles in shaping the STM’s ongoing safety strategies. The agency aims to foster a collaborative environment where both commuters and staff can contribute to creating a safer transit experience.
Why it Matters
The extension of the “move along” order underscores the STM’s commitment to prioritising safety within Montreal’s public transport system. As ridership continues to recover post-pandemic, ensuring a secure environment is essential for restoring public confidence in transit services. This initiative not only aims to enhance the daily commuting experience but also reflects broader societal efforts to maintain public spaces as safe and welcoming for all. By addressing issues of incivility and disruptive behaviour, the STM is taking significant steps towards a more secure and pleasant travel environment, which is essential for the city’s vibrancy and accessibility.
