StubHub UK Ordered to Refund Customers Amid Hidden Fees Investigation

In a significant ruling, StubHub UK has been directed to reimburse over 50,000 customers and pay a £900,000 penalty after failing to disclose total ticket prices upfront. This enforcement action, led by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), aims to protect consumers from hidden charges that distort pricing transparency in the ticket resale market.

The CMA’s investigation revealed that between 6 April and 7 December last year, customers purchasing tickets for concerts and sporting events through StubHub UK were confronted with unavoidable additional costs, such as service and delivery fees, only at the final checkout stage. Emma Cochrane, the executive director of consumer protection at the CMA, emphasised the illegality of imposing hidden fees. Cochrane stated, “Hitting customers with hidden fees is illegal. It’s not fair to draw people in with what looks like a good deal, only for them to find the real price is higher when they get to the checkout due to extra charges that can’t be avoided.”

The Financial Repercussions

As a result of these findings, StubHub UK is expected to issue refunds averaging £10 per transaction to affected customers. The company has acknowledged its legal transgressions and received a 40% reduction on its financial penalty due to its cooperation with the investigation. The CMA has confirmed that StubHub UK will reach out to customers regarding their refunds.

Cochrane added, “Going to a live gig or sports game is an event many people save for – and our action today means thousands of fans will get back money taken unfairly through hidden fees.” This ruling underscores the importance of consumer rights and the regulator’s commitment to enforcing fair pricing practices.
