A recent study published in *The Lancet* has highlighted a concerning trend: the risk posed by extreme heat to individuals aged 60 and above has been significantly underestimated. Researchers from Stanford University have assessed the implications of rising global temperatures on various age groups, revealing that as climate change accelerates, older adults are likely to face severe health risks from heat exposure that were previously overlooked.
Escalating Heat Risks for Older Adults
The study indicates that if global temperatures rise by 1.5°C, an estimated 22% of the world’s older population will endure “frequent and widespread exceedance of heat-compensability limits.” This means their bodies will struggle to regulate temperature effectively in extreme heat conditions. Current data from NASA shows that the Earth is already experiencing a temperature increase of approximately 1.19°C (2.14°F) compared to pre-industrial levels, with 2024 recorded as the hottest year on record, reaching 1.28°C (2.30°F) above baseline.
“As the planet warms, understanding where, when, and to what extent environmental conditions will exceed human heat tolerance becomes crucial,” the study emphasises. The researchers warn that intolerable heat will impact a far larger demographic than previously anticipated, leading to longer periods of exposure and increased health hazards.
Geographic Disparities in Heat Exposure
The report underscores alarming findings particularly in South Asia, where countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Niger are highlighted as regions of significant concern. At a warming level of 3°C, India alone could see 648.4 million people facing an average of 180 hours of “uncompensable heat stress” annually.
The study reveals that over 10 million older adults, representing at least 80% of the older demographic, currently experience more than 180 hours per year of extreme heat exposure. The risk is not only confined to short bursts of heat; older individuals in South Asia and the Persian Gulf may endure relentless heat for three consecutive months at this level of warming.
An Aging Population and Its Implications
The global demographic landscape is shifting. By 2050, the number of individuals aged 60 and over is projected to double from one billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion, constituting 21% of the global population. This rapid increase raises significant concerns, as older adults will likely face “disproportionately severe and imminent risks” related to heat exposure.
The study also predicts that over two-thirds of this aging population will reside in low- and middle-income countries, many of which are already on the frontline of unmanageable heat stress. This demographic shift, combined with rising temperatures, poses profound challenges for public health and infrastructure.
The Consequences of Ignoring Vulnerabilities
The findings urge a reevaluation of how heat vulnerabilities are assessed, particularly for older adults. “By overlooking the ageing population and heat vulnerability of older adults, previous projections based on limits for young adults might have seriously underestimated the frequency, geographical extent, and imminence of uncompensable heat stress with climate change,” the researchers caution.
The *2025 Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change*, produced in collaboration with the World Health Organization, indicates that heat-related mortality rates have surged by 23% since the 1990s, resulting in an average of 546,000 deaths annually linked to heat exposure. The average individual was exposed to 16 days of dangerous heat in 2024 that could not have occurred without climate change, with the most vulnerable—infants and older adults—experiencing over 20 days of heatwaves, a fourfold increase over the past two decades.
