A recent study has highlighted the positive impact of London’s low and ultra-low emission zones (ULEZ) on children’s lung health. Conducted by researchers from Queen Mary University of London and Oxford University, the study examined over 3,000 children aged six to nine in central London and Luton, revealing that the introduction of these clean air initiatives has significantly improved lung capacity among young residents.
Positive Outcomes of Clean Air Initiatives
The research involved a comparative analysis between children in central London, where ULEZ regulations are in effect, and those in Luton, a town that lacks designated clean air areas. The findings indicated that children in London experienced a restoration of lung function to healthy levels after a notable decline due to pollution exposure.
After four years, the percentage of children with compromised lung function fell from 14% to 9% in London, while in Luton, it dropped from 9% to 7%. This data underscores the effectiveness of ULEZ, which was originally introduced by Mayor Sadiq Khan in response to growing concerns about air quality and public health.
Evidence of Health Benefits
The study’s authors assert that their findings provide compelling evidence for the broader implementation of clean air zones as a crucial public health measure. They noted that this research is among the first to directly link improvements in air quality from clean air zones to enhanced lung growth trajectories in children. “To our knowledge, we provide the first evidence that air quality improvements following the introduction of a clean air zone are associated with improved lung growth trajectories in children,” they stated.
Pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, primarily from traffic emissions, have been shown to adversely affect lung development in children and adolescents, increasing the risk of respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as contributing to premature mortality.
Call for Global Action
The research advocates for the acceleration of clean air initiatives on an international scale, highlighting that children around the world continue to face harmful air quality. The authors urge policymakers globally to consider implementing clean air zones to safeguard children’s lung health. They emphasised, “Decision makers globally should consider accelerating the introduction of clean air zones to improve children’s lung health.”
Currently, Canada does not have similar initiatives in place, although the federal government enforces strict vehicle emission standards. Cities like Toronto are contemplating congestion charges and low emission zones to mitigate traffic pollution along major routes.
