Super El Niño Accelerates Climate Challenges for Canada Amidst Record Wildfires

As wildfires rage across Canada and temperatures soar to alarming heights, the emergence of a “super El Niño” phenomenon is manifesting its impacts more quickly than many scientists anticipated. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has warned that 2026 is poised to become one of the hottest years on record, exacerbated by the warmer global temperatures that El Niño typically brings. This situation is already linked to heightened risks of drought, flooding, and unseasonably warm winters, trends that are prevalent in many regions globally as climate change continues to intensify.

Unprecedented Heat and Wildfires

The Canadian landscape is bearing the brunt of this climatic upheaval. As of July 21, wildfires in northern Ontario have consumed over 7,250 square kilometres of forest—an unprecedented figure that surpasses previous records. In British Columbia, approximately 110 active wildfires are currently reported, with nearly half classified as out of control. The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre has noted 729 active wildfires nationwide, contributing to a total of 4,460 wildfires recorded this year.

Global News meteorologist Anthony Farnell emphasised the role of El Niño in this year’s extreme conditions, suggesting that it has contributed to an increase in temperatures by one or two degrees. “That can significantly enhance evaporation rates,” Farnell stated. “Drier forests result from these elevated temperatures, making them more susceptible to fires.”

In early July, many regions of Canada experienced what meteorologists term a “heat dome,” a weather phenomenon where high atmospheric pressure traps heat and humidity. Farnell predicts that the intensifying El Niño may prolong these conditions into the fall, creating a precarious situation for both human and ecological communities.

The Shifting Hurricane Landscape

As the Atlantic hurricane season unfolds, the influence of El Niño is also being felt. Despite the season commencing in June, only one tropical storm had formed by mid-July, a trend attributed to the current El Niño conditions. “The Atlantic hurricane season tends to be less active during these periods,” Farnell noted. This reduced activity may also affect moisture levels in Atlantic Canada and parts of Europe, regions that often receive storms that recurve across the ocean.

El Niño disrupts hurricane formation by creating wind patterns that inhibit the development of tropical storms. “The wind shear associated with El Niño tends to tear thunderstorms apart before they can fully develop,” Farnell explained. While the Atlantic may see fewer hurricanes, the Pacific hurricane season is expected to be robust, with seven named storms already reported.

Forecasting a Warm Winter

Looking ahead, the peak of El Niño is anticipated in December, which experts predict will lead to a notably warmer and wetter winter for Canada. Kent Moore, an atmospheric physics professor at the University of Toronto, suggests that this could result in reduced snowfall across the country. “If winter precipitation falls as rain instead of snow, it diminishes the moisture reserve that typically supports ecosystems come spring,” he cautioned.

Farnell echoed this sentiment, forecasting a drier and milder winter for much of Canada, which could potentially exacerbate drought conditions in British Columbia and Alberta. Without a robust snowpack, the nation may face another challenging wildfire season next year. Furthermore, the risk of flooding is heightened, as seen in St. Catharines, Ontario, which declared a state of emergency following severe flooding events earlier this month.
