Moore anticipates, “We will likely see less snowfall across the country, which could exacerbate drought conditions in regions like British Columbia and Alberta.”
Farnell concurs, predicting a drier winter that could lead to another challenging wildfire season in the following year. The lack of snowpack may also increase the risk of flooding, as seen recently in St. Catharines, Ontario, which declared a state of emergency following severe flooding.
Moore warned that intense rainfall events may become more common, stating, “When it rains, it tends to rain harder now due to warmer temperatures leading to higher water vapour in the atmosphere.” This increased moisture could also enhance the likelihood of freezing rain events.
Despite the alarming acceleration of these extreme weather phenomena, the exact outcomes remain uncertain. Farnell noted, “With unprecedented global events, forecasts can only go so far; the real impact is difficult to predict.”
