As wildfires rage and temperatures reach unprecedented heights, the onset of a “super El Niño” is exerting a profound influence on Canada’s climate, arriving more swiftly and intensely than anticipated. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has projected that 2026 could be one of the hottest years on record, exacerbated by the typical impacts of an El Niño event, which include heightened droughts, flooding, and unseasonably mild winters. This situation is a stark reminder of the urgent need to address climate change, as these extreme weather patterns become increasingly frequent.

The Escalating Heat and Wildfire Crisis

Recent forecasts indicate a significant rise in global sea surface temperatures, reaching 20.86°C in June, surpassing previous records. The European Union’s Copernicus Marine Service attributes this increase to the developing El Niño conditions. Typically, an El Niño is confirmed when ocean temperatures in the tropical Pacific exceed 0.5 degrees Celsius above the long-term average; however, the current event is categorised as a super El Niño, with temperatures exceeding two degrees above the norm.

In Canada, the ramifications are already evident. Early estimates show that wildfires in northern Ontario have consumed more forest area this year than in any previous year on record, with over 7,250 square kilometres affected as of July 21. Meanwhile, British Columbia is grappling with around 110 active wildfires, 48 of which are classified as out of control, prompting over 30 evacuation orders across the province. The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reports a staggering 729 active wildfires nationwide, with a total of 4,460 incidents recorded to date this year.

Meteorologist Anthony Farnell has noted that the El Niño phenomenon is contributing to warmer temperatures, which results in increased evaporation and drier conditions in forests. He suggests that the current wildfire season, while severe, has yet to reach the catastrophic levels witnessed in 2025.

Anticipating Future Weather Patterns

The second half of the year poses further challenges as the El Niño’s strength continues to escalate. This phenomenon often leads to the formation of “heat domes,” a weather condition where high-pressure systems trap heat and humidity in a region, creating sweltering conditions. Such phenomena have been prevalent in Canada, and experts warn that they may worsen as the season progresses.

In addition to the immediate threat of wildfires, the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June to November, has also been impacted. While only one tropical storm has formed thus far, meteorologists, including Farnell, predict a weaker hurricane season due to the influence of El Niño. Historically, this pattern tends to suppress hurricane formation as wind shear increases, disrupting the development of tropical systems.

Conversely, the Pacific hurricane season is expected to be markedly more active, with seven named storms already formed. The warmer sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific are conducive to more cyclonic activity, raising concerns about the potential for heightened storm impacts as the season unfolds.

Expectations for Winter

As El Niño peaks in December, experts predict that Canada will experience milder and wetter winter conditions. Kent Moore, an atmospheric physics professor at the University of Toronto, notes that this may lead to less snowfall nationwide, as increased rain during the winter could diminish the winter snowpack. The absence of a robust snow cover raises the prospect of further drought conditions in regions like British Columbia and Alberta, which are already grappling with water shortages.

Moreover, the likelihood of flooding events is on the rise. Recent heavy rainfall has already prompted a state of emergency in St. Catharines, Ontario, highlighting the immediate risks associated with these changing weather patterns.
