Super El Niño Intensifies Climate Challenges for Canada Amid Record-Breaking Heat

As wildfires rage and temperatures soar, the emergence of a “super El Niño” is impacting Canada and other regions more swiftly than anticipated. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), 2026 is poised to be one of the hottest years on record. The combined effects of El Niño’s warmer global temperatures exacerbate climate phenomena such as droughts, intense rainfall, and milder winters—conditions already evident across the globe as climate change continues to escalate.

Accelerating Climate Patterns

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has confirmed that a robust connection between atmospheric and oceanic circulations in the Pacific suggests high confidence that El Niño will persist through early 2027. In fact, there is an 81 per cent probability of a “very strong” El Niño occurring between October and December this year, potentially ranking among the most significant El Niño events since record-keeping began in 1950.

Meteorologist Anthony Farnell from Global News remarked, “What we’re witnessing is an unprecedented strengthening of El Niño, occurring faster than we have ever recorded. Much of this phenomenon can be attributed to the ongoing impacts of climate change.”

Rising global average sea surface temperatures have reached 20.86°C in June, surpassing previous records from 2023 and 2024, as noted by the European Union’s Copernicus Marine Service. The threshold for declaring an El Niño event is generally an increase of 0.5 degrees Celsius above the long-term average; however, a super El Niño occurs when temperatures exceed 2 degrees above this average.

Wildfire Risks and Heatwaves

Canada’s wildfire season has already surpassed previous records, with northern Ontario experiencing extensive forest fires. As of July 21, official estimates indicated that over 7,250 square kilometres of forest had been consumed, breaking the previous record set in 2021. Meanwhile, British Columbia faces its own challenges, with around 110 active wildfires, 48 of which are classified as out of control, resulting in over 30 evacuation orders as of August 1.

The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre currently reports 729 active wildfires across the country, with a total of 4,460 wildfires recorded this year. Federal officials have acknowledged the arduous nature of the current wildfire season, yet they assert that it has not reached the catastrophic levels seen in 2025.

Farnell explained, “I believe El Niño has contributed to a temperature increase of one or two degrees, significantly impacting evaporation rates, which in turn leaves forests drier and more susceptible to fires.” Earlier in July, many regions in Canada were trapped in what experts call a “heat dome,” where a high-pressure system traps heat and humidity, exacerbating the situation.

Impacts on Hurricane Activity

The Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June to November, has been relatively quiet, with only one tropical storm reported by July 19. Farnell attributes this lull to the presence of El Niño, stating, “The Atlantic hurricane season has a much lower activity level. Currently, we aren’t expecting many storms in the coming months, which could affect moisture levels in Atlantic Canada and Europe.”

El Niño events tend to hinder hurricane development due to increased wind shear, which disrupts the formation of tropical systems. “Hurricanes thrive on consistent winds, but during El Niño, winds tend to be more variable with height, which can inhibit storm formation,” Farnell added. This is good news for eastern Canada, as hurricanes can impact regions like Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

In contrast, the Pacific hurricane season is anticipated to be quite active, with the National Hurricane Center reporting seven named storms so far, including two that have reached hurricane status.

Winter Forecast and Future Concerns

As El Niño is expected to peak in December, Canada can brace for a warmer and wetter winter than usual, according to atmospheric physics expert Kent Moore from the University of Toronto. “We might see less snowfall, which means less winter precipitation available for spring,” he cautioned. Farnell echoed this sentiment, predicting a drier winter for much of Canada, which could exacerbate drought conditions in British Columbia and Alberta.

The potential for elevated flooding across the country is also a cause for concern. For instance, St. Catharines, Ontario, declared a state of emergency on August 4 following severe flooding in recent weeks. “We are now experiencing more intense rainfall events, largely due to warmer temperatures and higher humidity levels in the atmosphere,” Moore noted.

Furthermore, he warned of the likelihood of freezing rain events as temperatures hover around the freezing mark, creating additional hazards.
