As climate scientists closely monitor the evolving weather patterns, a powerful “super” El Niño is forecast to bring significant rainfall and potential flooding to the western and southeastern United States over the coming months. This phenomenon, characterised by elevated sea surface temperatures, is expected to strengthen through the autumn and winter seasons, continuing its influence until early spring 2027.

An Unprecedented Weather System

El Niño is a recurring climate event that arises when shifts in wind patterns allow warmer waters to spread across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. This year, experts predict the current El Niño could be the strongest of the century, with sea surface temperatures soaring by at least 2°C. According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), regions like California could see a staggering 70% to 100% chance of above-average rainfall along the coast.

Daniel Swain, a climate scientist from UCLA, emphasised that while El Niño does not guarantee specific weather outcomes, its intensity can significantly alter the probabilities. “A weather event as strong as the one being currently predicted shifts the odds in favour of a wet winter,” he stated during a recent virtual town hall meeting hosted by California state senator Mike McGuire. Swain further cautioned that such conditions would heighten the risk of coastal flooding, particularly during powerful storms or king tides.

Historical Context of El Niño Impact

Historically, California has faced devastating consequences during past El Niño events. The infamous 1982-83 El Niño caused extensive damage, destroying 33 oceanfront homes and affecting over 3,000 others, as reported by the California Coastal Commission. Similarly, the 1997-98 event resulted in catastrophic flooding and 17 storm-related fatalities. More recently, during the El Niño winter of 2015-16, state officials noted unprecedented coastal erosion.

Mark Merrifield from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography remarked during McGuire’s town hall that with reduced beach area, the impact of storm waves on the coastline becomes more pronounced. “With less beach in front of the coastline, the waves will have even greater impact on the shoreline,” he explained, highlighting the increased likelihood of flooding and cliff undercutting.

Broader Implications for Weather Patterns

While the super El Niño is likely to enhance precipitation in many areas, it will not completely alleviate drought conditions in the US southwest, where reservoirs remain critically low. Dr. Joel Lisonbee, a senior associate scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, indicated that “it would have to be exceptionally wet” to make a difference, warning that this could also lead to flooding and associated hazards.

The Gulf Coast and the East Coast, particularly regions from Florida to the mid-Atlantic, are likewise facing elevated chances of increased rainfall. NOAA data suggests that central and south Florida often experience more violent weather during El Niño years, with the 1998 winter bringing severe tornado outbreaks that resulted in 42 fatalities and over $100 million in damages.

Understanding El Niño’s Varied Effects

Experts caution that not every El Niño event manifests in the same manner or affects various geographical regions uniformly. Some El Niños have been linked to hurricanes and heavy rainfall, while others have triggered extreme heat and drought conditions. Merrifield noted that while El Niño is a natural cycle, the potential for a temporary rise in sea levels due to the super El Niño serves as a vital “stress test” for California, revealing vulnerabilities that may become more pronounced with ongoing climate change.

“The El Niño, I think, is a good opportunity to sort of see where our vulnerabilities are throughout the state and what we can do to prepare,” Merrifield remarked, offering a sobering perspective on the future challenges posed by climate change.
