When a tick bites, it can introduce alpha-gal into the bloodstream, leading the immune system to mistakenly identify it as a threat. This triggers the production of antibodies that cause severe allergic reactions upon subsequent exposure to mammalian meat or, in some cases, dairy products.

In 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Xolair, an injectable medication intended for various food allergies, including alpha-gal syndrome. Although it does not cure the condition, it can mitigate severe allergic reactions following unintended exposure to meat. Historically used for asthma treatment, Xolair works by reducing the inflammatory responses that contribute to allergic reactions.
Researchers like Dr. Commins are exploring additional therapeutic options, including other biologic drugs that may interrupt the allergic response process. “If you got one of those quickly after a tick bite, perhaps it could interfere with the entire allergic response process,” he suggests, indicating a hopeful direction for future treatments.
