In a response to escalating antisemitic violence, the Metropolitan Police have dramatically increased security resources aimed at protecting Jewish families during a significant religious festival. The heightened presence follows a series of alarming attacks, including a recent stabbing incident in Golders Green, which has left the community grappling with fear and anxiety.
Police Operation Escalates Amid Rising Threats
Last Tuesday evening, Inspector Thomas Vie briefed his officers in a van stationed in north London, addressing the stark reality of a potential terrorist threat targeting Jewish events. The police deployment was unprecedented, with more than five times the usual number of officers on duty to safeguard thousands of orthodox Jewish families celebrating Lag B’Omer. This festival, marked by parades and bonfires, became a focal point for community solidarity amid a backdrop of terror.
Just hours before the celebrations commenced, an arson attack was reported at a former synagogue in Tower Hamlets, emphasising the urgency of the situation. In light of these events, the police raised the threat level to “substantial” for gatherings in Stamford Hill, home to one of Europe’s largest Hasidic communities. Although no specific intelligence indicated an imminent attack, officers were warned to remain vigilant, as the risk of antisemitic violence loomed large.
Increased Surveillance and Community Cooperation
This year marked a significant shift in the security landscape. For the first time, protective barriers designed to prevent vehicle ramming attacks were deployed at the celebrations. The Shomrim, a community volunteer group dedicated to protecting Jewish areas, doubled its security personnel to 100 volunteers, working alongside police to ensure safety at events across London.
The Independent was granted exclusive access to observe this extensive police operation, which is part of a broader initiative to combat what officials have termed a “pandemic” of antisemitism. The Metropolitan Police announced that it would deploy an additional 1,000 officer shifts weekly to bolster protections in areas with significant Jewish populations. This comes in response to a national terror threat level that has been raised to severe, particularly following the Golders Green attack.
