British households are increasingly opting for green energy solutions as they seek to mitigate the impact of soaring fuel prices driven by global conflicts. Recent data indicates a significant uptick in interest for solar panels, electric vehicles, and heat pumps since the onset of the Iran crisis on 28 February. As energy costs are projected to rise by 18% come July, families are proactively embracing renewable energy options to secure more manageable monthly bills.
Record Growth in Solar and Heat Pump Installations
Leading energy suppliers, including Octopus Energy and British Gas, have reported remarkable increases in the demand for green home energy upgrades. Octopus Energy, the largest energy provider in Great Britain, revealed that sales of solar power systems surged by nearly 80% in March alone. Additionally, the company noted a more than 100% increase in heat pump installations compared to the previous month, alongside an 85% rise in electric vehicle leases.
British Gas echoed these trends, announcing a staggering 250% rise in inquiries for solar panel installations since late February. A spokesperson for the company remarked on the noticeable spike in consumer interest in heat pumps as well, demonstrating a clear shift in consumer behaviour.
Families Taking Charge of Energy Costs
Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Product Officer at Octopus, commented on the situation, stating, “British families are tired of being held hostage by global fossil fuel prices. We’re seeing a massive shift as people take matters into their own hands – switching to solar, heat pumps and EVs, locking in low running costs and shielding themselves from future price shocks.”
A case in point is Allan Burgess from Great Yarmouth, who decided to install a heat pump last month due to rising heating oil prices, which skyrocketed from £250 to £700 for 500 litres within a week. With over a million UK households relying on heating oil, particularly in rural areas not connected to the gas grid, Burgess’s story highlights the urgent need for alternatives. He expressed his concerns about heating disruptions, particularly as his wife is disabled, but managed to have a heat pump installed shortly after the crisis began.
The Shift Towards Renewable Energy
Furbnow, a provider of home energy upgrades, reported a 42% increase in inquiries since late February, with many seeking to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. Chief Executive Becky Lane noted that these decisions reflect careful consideration rather than panic. “Families have realised the most resilient thing they can do is reduce how much energy their home needs in the first place. No price spike can touch a home that barely needs energy,” she stated.
The data revealed that nearly three-quarters of prospective clients requested solar panels, and over half expressed interest in replacing their gas or oil boilers with electric heat pumps. Moreover, approximately 40% sought quotes for insulation upgrades, further indicating a comprehensive approach to energy efficiency.
