A concerning trend has emerged at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, where medical professionals are witnessing an alarming increase in serious injuries among children resulting from e-scooter accidents. As the popularity of these devices escalates, so too does the severity of the injuries, prompting urgent calls for enhanced safety measures and public awareness.
Rising Incident Rates
Dr. Suzanne Beno, a pediatric emergency physician and co-medical director of the hospital’s trauma programme, has noted a dramatic rise in e-scooter-related injuries. “The numbers have increased exponentially,” she stated, highlighting that the hospital reached a critical threshold in 2024, with injuries doubling each year since then. Currently, SickKids is seeing an influx of three to five e-scooter injuries weekly. While some cases involve minor harm, an increasing number of children are being admitted to the trauma bay following high-speed collisions or crashes with vehicles.
Beno emphasised the gravity of the situation: “We see a lot of patients with head injuries, thoracic injuries, some spinal injuries, abdominal injuries, and a significant number of fractures.” The severity of these injuries often necessitates complex surgical interventions, intensive care, and extended rehabilitation periods.
Severe Injuries Becoming Standard
For Dr. Carolyn Rutten, a pediatric emergency radiologist at SickKids, the review of imaging scans from e-scooter accidents has become a regular part of her overnight duties. “At this point in the summer, they’re almost daily occurrences,” she remarked. Rutten noted that the fractures sustained in e-scooter incidents are frequently more severe than those typically experienced during playground accidents.
“With e-scooters, we observe more significant fractures, often with substantial displacement compared to typical playground trauma,” she explained. The hospital is also experiencing a troubling rise in traumatic brain injuries, with children suffering from skull fractures and internal bleeding in the brain. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be required to relieve pressure by removing part of the skull.
When asked about the advisability of children riding e-scooters, Rutten candidly stated, “I really wish they weren’t.”
The Long Road to Recovery
Dr. Joshua Ramjist, a pediatric general surgeon and trauma medical co-director, highlighted that many families underestimate the potential severity of injuries associated with e-scooter use. “They behave like any other motorised vehicle, and the injury patterns we observe resemble those from high-speed motor vehicle accidents,” he noted.
Injuries often affect multiple body parts, including the head, chest, and abdomen, leading to protracted recovery periods for young patients. “It’s more than just broken bones,” Ramjist cautioned. “We’re dealing with multi-organ injuries.” Some children require extensive surgeries and prolonged stays in intensive care, followed by weeks or even months of rehabilitation before they can resume their normal activities.
As e-scooter usage continues to rise, Dr. Beno stressed the need for preventive measures that extend beyond simply advising children to wear helmets. “We need robust public education, clearer regulations, improved enforcement, and safer infrastructure to effectively reduce the incidence of severe injuries,” she asserted.
Moreover, Beno pointed out that many parents remain unaware that privately owned e-scooters can reach much higher speeds than their rental counterparts. Rutten confirmed that research conducted by SickKids has documented incidents where e-scooters were travelling at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour. “The higher the speed, the greater the impact trauma, and the more severe the injuries sustained,” she stated.
Beno concluded with a critical observation: children under 16 should refrain from riding e-scooters, as many lack the necessary physical and cognitive skills to navigate them safely. “It’s tragic because it’s so preventable,” she lamented.
