A chilling report has revealed that a mosque in the United Kingdom faces an attack every five days, highlighting a disturbing trend of increasing hostility towards Muslim places of worship. Data released by the British Muslim Trust has documented more than 70 incidents over the past year, encompassing a range of offences from vandalism and harassment to physical violence and hate speech. This surge in anti-Muslim sentiment has prompted calls for immediate government intervention to bolster the security of these vulnerable communities.
Alarming Statistics on Mosque Attacks
The statistics are staggering. In the year leading up to March 2025, the Home Office reported a 19% rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes across England and Wales. Akeela Ahmed, the chief executive of the British Muslim Trust, emphasised the urgency of the situation: “We are seeing a steady rise in the number of attacks against mosques, and we believe the government should be doing everything it can to help mosques protect themselves.”
The data identifies London, Greater Manchester, and the West Midlands as the primary hotspots for these attacks. Notably, London has recorded nine separate incidents, while a mosque in Birmingham has experienced three assaults within the last year alone.
Security Measures and Funding Challenges
In response to this alarming trend, the government previously announced a £40 million funding initiative aimed at enhancing the security of mosques. This programme allows places of worship to apply for financial assistance to implement physical security measures, including CCTV installations, alarm systems, and fencing. However, the British Muslim Trust has raised concerns regarding the accessibility of these funds.
Ahmed pointed out that the application process for security funding is fraught with hurdles. Many mosques have reported waiting periods of up to 18 months for approval, and a significant number of applications have been denied without clear explanations. “A mosque is vulnerable purely because it’s a mosque,” Ahmed stated, highlighting the precarious situation where places of worship are left exposed to potential attacks while their funding applications languish in bureaucratic limbo.
The Growing Stigma
Recent studies conducted by the British Muslim Trust in partnership with British Future reveal that societal attitudes towards Muslims are shifting alarmingly. One in six Britons now perceives the growth of the Muslim population as a fundamental threat to British culture, a sentiment that raises concerns about the normalisation of anti-Muslim hostility. This backdrop of increasing stigma only exacerbates the fears felt by Muslim communities across the country.
A Home Office spokesperson acknowledged the severity of the issue, stating, “Muslims in the UK face appalling levels of religious hate crime. It’s crucial that they not only are safe but feel safe.” The spokesperson also reassured the public that the government is prioritising the processing of funding applications for protective measures at mosques, Muslim faith schools, and community centres.
