Recent data from the fuel theft recovery company, Pay My Fuel, indicates that the average petrol station is now experiencing approximately 3.4 drive-offs each week, a notable increase from just 2.1 in March 2022. The average value of fuel stolen during these incidents has also risen, climbing 46% from £56 to £67 per drive-off. This escalation has led forecourt owners like Josh, who operates five garages in the south of England, to report a rise in drive-offs from one or two incidents weekly to around five.
CCTV footage shared with the BBC highlights the alarming frequency of these thefts, with incidents occurring throughout the day and involving significant amounts of fuel. In one instance, a motorbike rider filled up £14.97 worth of petrol before fleeing, while another video captured a driver in a white van taking £151.53 worth of fuel without payment. Josh commented, “There seems to be a public acceptance now that theft is okay,” suggesting that the majority of these thefts are premeditated rather than acts of desperation.

Since the onset of hostilities, the cost to fill a standard family car has surged by £14, while diesel prices have increased by approximately £27. Gordon Balmer, the executive director of the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA), noted that this price hike has coincided with a noticeable uptick in theft incidents, with some of the thefts attributed to organised crime.
Superintendent Lisa Maslen from the National Business Crime Centre emphasised that fuel theft is putting substantial financial pressure on retailers while straining police resources.
