In a concerning trend, Ventura County, California has reported its sixth rattlesnake bite in just under a month. This surge of incidents, occurring earlier than usual due to an unusually warm spring, has already resulted in two fatalities in Southern California. As more residents flock to trails, the dangers of encountering these venomous reptiles are becoming alarmingly evident.

A String of Incidents

The latest bite occurred last Sunday when a man was attacked near California State University Channel Islands. Paramedics quickly responded, and the victim was transported to a local hospital where he received antivenom. Fortunately, he is now in stable condition. This incident comes on the heels of a record-setting year in 2025, where Ventura County documented nine rattlesnake bites throughout the entire year.

The recent uptick in rattlesnake encounters is particularly alarming, given that the county has already seen two tragic fatalities from snake bites this year. On March 14, a 46-year-old woman lost her life while hiking in Wildwood Regional Park, and just days earlier, on March 4, a 25-year-old man died after being bitten while biking near the Quail Hill Trailhead in Orange County.

Contributing Factors

Andrew Dowd, a spokesperson for the Ventura County Fire Department, attributes the increase in rattlesnake activity to a combination of environmental factors. “We’ve experienced a warmer spring compared to previous years, and heavy rains this winter have led to an earlier emergence of snakes,” he explained. The early warmth, with temperatures soaring into the 80s and 90s in March, has likely encouraged these reptiles to venture out. Additionally, the winter rains have boosted the population of small rodents, which are a primary food source for rattlesnakes.

The California Poison Control System has reported a notable rise in calls concerning rattlesnake bites, with 77 cases recorded in the first quarter of 2026 alone. This number is significantly higher than the usual annual average of 200 to 300 calls, reflecting a state that is not only home to the only venomous snake species native to California but also facing a heightened risk this year.

Safety Reminders for Outdoor Activities

While rattlesnake bites remain rare, experts urge outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution. Dr. Jeffrey Suchard, an emergency physician and toxicologist at UCI Health, reassures the public that “death by rattlesnake bite is extremely rare.” Each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports approximately 7,000 to 8,000 snake bites across the United States, with a mere five fatalities on average.

To mitigate the risk of a snake bite, Dowd provides essential safety tips for hikers. Staying on marked trails, avoiding dense vegetation, wearing protective clothing, and carrying a fully charged mobile phone can significantly enhance safety. In the unfortunate event of a snake bite, he emphasises the importance of remaining calm and limiting movement to slow venom spread while promptly calling for medical assistance.

Why it Matters

As warmer weather draws people outdoors, the rise in rattlesnake encounters serves as a critical reminder of the need for vigilance in nature. With an increasing number of bites reported so early in the season, both locals and visitors must be aware of their surroundings and take proactive measures to ensure their safety. Understanding the behaviour of rattlesnakes and adhering to safety guidelines can help prevent tragic outcomes and foster a safer outdoor experience for everyone.
