Target Corporation has withdrawn nearly 1.7 million pounds of sugar after tests showed the product might contain wheat kernel, an allergen not declared on the packaging. The recall covers several bag sizes sold under the United, Good & Gather and Crystal Sugar labels and was distributed to retailers in eight Midwestern and Eastern states.

What Prompted the Recall

The company initiated a voluntary withdrawal last month when internal checks revealed the possible presence of wheat in the sugar. Wheat is one of the nine major food allergens identified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. After the finding, the FDA classified the action earlier this week, warning that eating the affected sugar could lead to “health consequences” for those with wheat sensitivities or allergies.

Which Products Are Involved

The notice lists five specific items: 50‑pound bags of United Light Brown Sugar, two‑pound bags of Good & Gather Light Brown Sugar, 50‑pound bags of United 6X Powdered Sugar, 25‑pound bags of Crystal Sugar Powdered Sugar and two‑pound bags of Good & Gather Powdered Sugar. Both consumer‑size and commercial‑size packages are part of the withdrawal, amounting to a combined 1.7 million pounds of light brown and powdered sugar.

The affected shipments reached stores in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas. The recall notice did not name the individual retailers that received the products, only stating that the sugar was sent to outlets across those states.

Other Recent Food Recalls

This sugar withdrawal follows a series of alerts affecting everyday groceries. Earlier this week, Walmart removed lots of bettergoods Authentic Italian Lemon Alfredo Fettuccine after potential listeria contamination was detected; the pasta carries UPC 194346442706 and lot numbers L6079C or L6080C, with expiry dates of 19 or 20 September 2027. In addition, Danone USA recalled So Delicious Dairy Free Salted Caramel Cluster Non‑Dairy Frozen Dessert after discovering that foreign material such as “small stones and other hard objects” might be present in certain pints. The recall applies to all pints with a best‑by date on or before 3 April 2028, identified by SKU 136603 and UPC 744473476138. A Danone spokeswoman told The Independent that the action “is limited to this one product. No other So Delicious Dairy Free codes, flavors or products are affected.”

Why it Matters

The scale of the sugar recall underscores how a single ingredient oversight can ripple through national supply chains, potentially exposing thousands of consumers to an undeclared allergen. For individuals with wheat allergies, even trace amounts can trigger serious reactions, making clear labelling and swift retailer response essential. The incident also highlights the broader pattern of frequent food safety notices, reminding shoppers to stay vigilant about product alerts and reinforcing the need for robust testing and transparent communication from manufacturers and regulators alike.
