Recent measurements from a NOAA-sponsored stratospheric flight have uncovered concerning levels of metals in sulphuric acid aerosols, which play a crucial role in regulating Earth’s climate. These findings suggest that the interaction between the pollutants from spacecraft and the existing atmospheric components remains “largely unknown.” This uncertainty raises significant questions about the long-term effects of increased satellite activity on global weather patterns and climate stability.
Steve Volz, a former head of NOAA’s satellite office, shared his scepticism regarding the feasibility of large-scale orbital datacentres.
