However, a coalition of environmental experts and advocacy groups has raised alarm bells, contending that these initiatives could unleash catastrophic levels of pollution, fundamentally altering our planet’s atmosphere. A recent petition to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) demands a thorough review of these proposals amid escalating fears over their environmental impact.

The tech giants are proposing millions of “orbital data centres,” which require federal approval to proceed. Yet, experts warn that the pollution generated by satellites and rocket launches could lead to severe atmospheric consequences. The petition highlights that emissions from space vehicles—including black soot, rare metals, and aluminium oxides—are accumulating in the stratosphere at alarming rates.

Some scientists are expressing grave concerns that this pollution could jeopardise the ozone layer, increasing ultraviolet radiation exposure and exacerbating the ongoing climate crisis. Furthermore, the potential for these pollutants to return to Earth raises questions about their long-term effects on both human health and the environment.

The Call for a Moratorium

The petition, spearheaded by the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER), Earthjustice, and DarkSky International, is calling for a halt to new licences for these data centre projects. The groups argue that the plans violate federal law and have not been subjected to adequate scrutiny regarding their environmental implications.

“While proponents tout their technologies as revolutionary, they have consistently shied away from addressing the environmental impacts of their ventures,” the petition states. This sentiment is echoed by former officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), who have voiced scepticism about the practicality and safety of deploying millions of additional satellites.

Steve Volz, a former NOAA satellite office head, remarked, “You wouldn’t want to fill the atmosphere with refuse any more than you’d want it coming from a smoke stack.” Such sentiments underline the growing unease surrounding the launch of these vast satellite networks.

Growing Numbers of Satellites and Their Implications

The rise in active satellites has been staggering, leaping from approximately 1,400 in 2015 to roughly 15,000 today. Experts predict this number could swell to 100,000 within the next decade, excluding the proposed data centre networks. The bulk of this pollution is attributed to the broadband internet constellations operated by Starlink and Amazon, comprising around 10,000 satellites.

The environmental consequences of these launches are multifaceted. They emit a cocktail of harmful substances, including nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and mercury, which pose risks during both ascent and re-entry. When satellites are decommissioned after their operational lifespan, they too contribute to atmospheric pollutants as they burn up upon re-entry.

Recent scientific studies have shown that metals from spacecraft can interact with sulfuric acid aerosols in the stratosphere, which are critical for regulating Earth’s temperature. However, the long-term effects of these interactions remain largely unknown, prompting urgent calls for further research.

The Dark Side of Light Pollution

A significant aspect of this issue is the potential impact on the night sky. Advocates argue that light pollution from these projects poses a serious threat to nocturnal wildlife and biodiversity. “These developments could irreversibly change our night skies,” cautioned Ruskin Hartley, executive director of DarkSky International. The ecological consequences could be dire, with many species relying on darkness for survival.

As companies like the Cowboy Space Corporation seek permits for their proposed 20,000-satellite system, the question of resource scarcity also looms large. The demand for rare metals and materials, already in short supply, raises further environmental challenges on the ground.
