In an alarming turn of events, industry leaders Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are facing mounting criticism over their ambitious plans to launch vast networks of space-based data centres. A coalition of environmental advocates and space industry experts has filed a petition demanding a thorough review of these proposals, citing potential catastrophic impacts on our planet’s atmosphere. However, the environmental toll is concerning. The emissions from rocket launches include a cocktail of pollutants: black carbon, nitrogen oxides, and metals that enter the atmosphere and can disrupt previously pristine layers.

Research has begun to unveil some of the alarming consequences of these emissions. A NOAA-sponsored study in late 2023 detected metals in the stratospheric aerosols that are crucial for regulating Earth’s temperature. Environmental advocates are sounding the alarm not just for the Earth but for the night sky itself. “These projects could permanently alter the night sky as we know it,” asserts Ruskin Hartley, executive director of DarkSky International. The implications for ecosystems reliant on darkness, such as fireflies and other nocturnal creatures, could be dire.

Moreover, the resource demands of these orbital data centres pose another layer of environmental concern. Cole Donovan, a former NOAA space policy expert, highlights that the extraction of rare metals needed for these projects could further exacerbate existing environmental challenges on Earth.

As the debate heats up, the petition underscores the necessity for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to carefully evaluate whether granting permission for these satellite networks truly serves the public interest. The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) mandates that federal agencies assess the environmental impacts of their projects, a requirement that advocates believe must be applied to the sprawling satellite networks.

The Future of Space and Sustainability

Among those pushing for permits is the Cowboy Space Corporation, co-founded by Robinhood’s billionaire co-CEO. With aspirations of establishing a 20,000-satellite system by 2028, their environmental mitigation references have been called into question for lacking substance.

Similarly, SpaceX claims its orbital data centres will promote “humanity’s multi-planetary future,” yet fails to provide sufficient detail on mitigating environmental risks. The petition argues that no proponent has satisfactorily addressed how to handle the cumulative environmental impacts of operating over a million satellites.
