This petition, submitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), raises urgent concerns about the pollution impact of these projects, suggesting that the consequences could be catastrophic for our planet.
A Call for Caution
The petition, driven by the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, Earthjustice, and DarkSky International, calls for a halt on new licensing for space datacentres until a thorough environmental review is conducted. The signatories argue that the plans for these orbital facilities could violate federal law and jeopardise the atmosphere. As tech companies ambitiously push for millions of satellites to provide data processing capabilities in space, experts warn of the accumulating pollution from rocket launches and satellite re-entries.
“The pollution from these operations could significantly alter the stratosphere,” said Steve Volz, a former NOAA satellite office head. He emphasised that the introduction of pollutants like black soot, rare metals, and aluminium oxides could have unknown effects on the atmosphere, including the potential destruction of the ozone layer. If these pollutants return to Earth, they may also contribute to severe light pollution, further disrupting natural ecosystems.
The Rapid Expansion of Satellites
The growth of active satellites in orbit is nothing short of exponential—skyrocketing from around 1,400 in 2015 to an astonishing 15,000 today. Projections suggest we could see up to 100,000 satellites orbiting Earth within the next decade, not accounting for the proposed datacentre networks. The bulk of current emissions is attributed to Musk’s Starlink and Bezos’s internet constellation, which together comprise around 10,000 satellites.

Ruskin Hartley, executive director of DarkSky International, pointed out that the loss of darkness is already contributing to the decline of fireflies and other insects. “These projects could permanently alter the night sky as we know it,” he warned, urging the FCC to prioritise the protection of naturally dark skies.
Moreover, the demand for rare metals and resources necessary for constructing these satellites poses additional challenges. Cole Donovan, a former NOAA space policy expert, highlighted the environmental implications of sourcing these materials, suggesting that the tech industry must address its own supply chain impacts as it aims for the stars.

Among those seeking permits is Cowboy Space Corporation, founded by the co-CEO of Robinhood, aiming to deploy a staggering 20,000 satellite system by 2028. However, their environmental mitigation references were found lacking, raising further concerns about the accountability of these ambitious projects. SpaceX’s claims about its orbital datacentres ensuring humanity’s multi-planetary future were met with skepticism, given that their environmental risk assessments provided little in the way of concrete details.
