In a significant escalation of hostilities in the already volatile region surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the United States has conducted airstrikes on Iranian military installations, prompting a retaliatory response from Tehran. This marked the third exchange of fire in a week, as both nations grapple with the consequences of stalled diplomatic negotiations aimed at averting further conflict.
US Strikes Target Iranian Military Infrastructure
The US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed that it executed “self-defence strikes” over the weekend against Iranian radar and command facilities located in Goruk and Qeshm, strategic sites near Iran’s southern coast. Centcom reported that these strikes were in direct response to “aggressive actions” by Iran, including the downing of an American drone in international waters.
In a statement, Centcom detailed that US forces targeted Iranian air defences, a ground control station, and unmanned aerial vehicles that were perceived as threats to maritime traffic in the region. Fortunately, no American personnel were reported injured during these retaliatory actions.
