The IUCN’s latest report reveals alarming trends in global biodiversity. Ingenious adaptations have allowed life to flourish in some of the most hostile environments on Earth. However, these evolutionary marvels are now being jeopardised by human exploitation. Among the newly classified endangered species are the desert rain frog, native to southern Africa, and various molluscs found in extreme ocean depths, both on the receiving end of destructive mining practices.
The desert rain frog stands out due to its remarkable ability to thrive in arid conditions. Unlike typical frogs that depend on water, this unique species has evolved to survive with minimal moisture by burrowing deep into sandy terrains, emerging only at night to hunt for insects. Sadly, diamond mining and energy infrastructure expansion along the west coast of South Africa and Namibia are encroaching upon its habitat, leading to a vulnerable classification.
Deep-Sea Mining: A Hidden Peril
Simultaneously, the deep-sea environment is under siege. An estimated two-thirds of the mollusc species residing in the deep ocean, particularly those attached to hydrothermal vents, are now at risk of extinction due to resource extraction. These molluscs have adapted to thrive in extreme conditions, where temperatures soar to 450°C (842°F), yet the advent of deep-sea mining poses a significant threat. The sedimentation caused by mining activities smothers these organisms, leading to dramatic declines in their populations.
One particularly endangered species, Lirapex felix, has been severely impacted by mining in the Indian Ocean. However, there are glimmers of hope; over 30 vent species remain safe, thriving in marine protected areas where mining is prohibited.
Conservation Success Stories
Despite the grim outlook for many species, the IUCN report highlights remarkable conservation successes. The numbat, a striped marsupial from Australia once teetering on the brink of extinction, has seen its population rebound from a mere 300 individuals in the late 1970s to approximately 2,000-3,000 today. This resurgence has been achieved through dedicated conservation efforts aimed at reducing threats from invasive species such as feral cats and foxes.
Through targeted management techniques, including predator-proof fencing and captive breeding programmes, conservationists have established several self-sustaining populations. Nevertheless, the numbat’s habitat remains restricted to just 0.04% of its original range, underscoring the necessity for ongoing conservation measures.
Despite the encouraging news surrounding the numbat, the report also reveals the stark reality that five additional Australian marsupials have been declared extinct. This includes several small carnivorous species and a rabbit-sized marsupial known as the little bettong, which disappeared due to predation pressures from invasive species.
