In a world where screens often steal the spotlight, a remarkable series of children’s books is proving that the magic of reading still captivates young minds. The You Choose series, crafted by the dynamic duo Pippa Goodhart and Nick Sharratt, has become a cherished staple in family homes, so much so that copies are literally falling apart from love and use. With the latest addition, You Choose Party Time, hitting shelves this month, we delve into the story behind this bestselling phenomenon that nearly didn’t see the light of day.

A Simple Concept with Endless Possibilities

At its core, the You Choose series is a celebration of choice and imagination. Each beautifully illustrated double-page spread invites young readers to select from vibrant images, allowing them to craft their own unique narratives. This interactive format has resonated deeply with children, making it a staple at bedtime and beyond.

The journey began 23 years ago with Goodhart, an accomplished author of over 150 children’s books, who conceived the idea while her children were still little. “It took a very long time to find a publisher,” she recalls, a hint of mischief in her voice. “Nine publishers turned it down because it doesn’t tell a story.” But therein lies the strength of the series. It offers not one story, but thousands, empowering children to direct their own adventures every time they pick up the book.

From Rejection to Bestseller

The journey to success was anything but straightforward. Goodhart’s persistence paid off when an editor at Random House, recognising the series’ potential, asked her who her ideal illustrator would be. Her answer was Nick Sharratt, known for his vibrant artwork in the beloved Jacqueline Wilson books.

Their collaboration birthed the first title, simply named You Choose. Sharratt, who faced the steep learning curve of digital illustration for the first time, recalls the process as “a baptism by fire.” Despite the initial struggles and the hurdles that followed, the series gained traction organically, largely thanks to word-of-mouth recommendations from parents and advocates like Wendy Cooling, founder of the children’s reading charity Bookstart.

Over the years, the You Choose brand has expanded to include six titles, with over 2.5 million copies sold and translations into 18 languages. The latest release, You Choose Party Time, is set to further enrich this beloved series.

Engaging Young Minds and Building Connections

What sets the You Choose books apart is their versatility. They cater to a wide range of ages, making them perfect for shared reading experiences or solo exploration. Goodhart notes, “It’s a snuggle-up-on-your-lap and share book. But children also love to gather in groups, discussing and selecting options together.”

Parents and educators have found them particularly effective in fostering language development and communication skills. Speech therapists often incorporate the books into their sessions, as the open-ended nature of the narratives invites conversations and insights into a child’s thoughts and preferences. Sharratt adds, “You can learn quite a lot about the children you’re working with by what they choose.”

The Power of Connection Through Reading

The impact of the You Choose series extends beyond mere entertainment; it nurtures relationships. As families share these books, they bond over discussions and choices, creating cherished memories. Letters from readers often touch the authors’ hearts, with Sharratt fondly recalling how some families arrive at signings with their tattered copies, symbolising countless moments spent together.

In a time when the allure of digital distractions is overwhelming, Goodhart and Sharratt’s creation stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of reading for pleasure. It encourages not just literacy, but also emotional connections that can last a lifetime.

You Choose Party Time is now available, and with more titles on the horizon, the legacy of this extraordinary series continues to grow. The authors will also be participating in the Henley Literary Festival on Sunday, 11 October, further engaging with their audience and celebrating the joy of reading.

Why it Matters

The You Choose series is more than a collection of children’s books; it’s a cultural phenomenon that addresses the crucial need for interactive and engaging reading materials in a screen-dominated age. As families strive to instill a love of reading in their children, Goodhart and Sharratt’s work shines brightly, proving that the right book can inspire creativity, spark conversations, and forge lasting connections. In nurturing a generation of readers, the You Choose books are not just telling stories; they are crafting a communal experience that will resonate for years to come.
