But while we’re seeing an awful lot of apprehension, we have to see the opportunity. Some crops that we could never even imagine growing here are now becoming viable.”
Fruits that were once exclusive to warmer climates, such as olives and grapes, are now being explored as viable options for British growers. The shift in temperature is opening doors to a broader array of species that could thrive in the UK’s evolving climate.
Vegetables in a Changing Climate
The summer of 2026 has proven particularly challenging for vegetable producers, with significant declines reported in yields of leafy greens, carrots, and pumpkins. Liz Mooney from the Royal Horticultural Society indicated that the impact of climate change on agriculture is profound. “Sweet potatoes, sweet peppers, artichokes, and chillies are all vegetables that are now able to grow here, without the need for greenhouses or extra equipment,” she stated.

Professor Nichola Cannon from the Royal Agricultural University highlighted the promising future of crops like soya, which thrive in warmer conditions. Additionally, the British wine sector has experienced a boon due to consistently high summer temperatures. Adrian Pike, managing director and winemaker at Westwell Wine Estates in Kent, noted, “The impact of the warmer, sunnier weather on Westwell has been largely positive for our growing season. Heat really helps to ripen the fruit.” This trend suggests that the UK could become an emerging player in the global wine market, leveraging its unique climate conditions to produce distinctive wines.
Balancing Optimism with Caution
Despite these emerging opportunities, experts urge caution. Professor Carol Wagstaff, director of Agrifood Futures at the University of Reading, cautioned that while current trends appear promising, the volatility of climate conditions complicates predictions for future crop success. “We are having the hottest summers, but we’re also having the wettest winters and the latest springs,” she explained.
Wagstaff emphasised the need for a proactive approach to agriculture, viewing climate change as a complex risk that necessitates improved agricultural infrastructure, labour, and crop diversity. “Doing this will not just help the planet, but give our citizens a healthier, better life – and who wouldn’t want that?”
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is currently working towards building “stronger, more resilient food supply chains” to mitigate potential disruptions in the agricultural sector.
