Gregory Marcus, chair of the scientific statement volunteer writing group, indicated that caffeine is a staple for millions globally, and its intake at safe levels does not contribute to increased cardiovascular risk.
Marcus stated, “Caffeine consumed in coffee is a key part of daily life for millions of people, and in our review of the most recent research, for most adults, intake of up to 400mg of caffeine a day… is safe and does not increase cardiovascular risk.” This finding aligns with previous studies suggesting that moderate coffee consumption could even correlate with a reduced incidence of strokes and heart failure.
The Dangers of High-Caffeine Energy Drinks
In contrast, the study highlights the dangers associated with high-caffeine energy drinks, which can contain three to four times the caffeine found in a standard cup of coffee. For example, while traditional coffee typically contains between 9.5 to 20.6mg of caffeine per fluid ounce, some energy drinks boast caffeine levels of 40 to 69mg per ounce.
Marcus warns, “High doses of caffeine, such as those found in energy drinks, including energy shots, may have harmful effects on the heart and should be avoided.” The potential for adverse effects is particularly concerning given that energy drinks have been linked to abnormal heart rhythms, even in individuals considered low-risk for cardiovascular issues.
The Body’s Response to Caffeine
Upon consumption, caffeine is metabolised by the liver, reaching peak levels in the bloodstream within an hour. This process can lead to temporary increases in blood pressure, heart rate, and blood sugar levels alongside heightened alertness.
