In the latest instalment of the iconic Star Trek franchise, viewers are transported to the 32nd century, where the legendary Starfleet Academy is set to welcome its first new intake in over a century. This hormone-fuelled tale of the training college for space voyagers is a far cry from the disciplined crews of the past, as a diverse group of cadets, including a troubled teen, a young pacifist Klingon, and a sentient hologram, are thrown into a high-stakes mission to save the day.

Leading the charge is the formidable Chancellor Nahla Ake, played by the ever-captivating Holly Hunter. Ake is a former Starfleet captain whose half-Lanthanite heritage has granted her a longevity that spans the pre- and post-Burn eras. Her unorthodox approach to leadership, which includes going barefoot and favouring vintage spectacles, sets her apart from the stoic captains of old.

The series opener is a thrilling space adventure that pits the USS Athena, a gigantic campus-cum-starship, against the vengeful alien ne’er-do-well, Braka, played with delightful scenery-chewing by Paul Giamatti. Caleb, the troubled teen at the heart of the story, is tasked with leading his fellow cadets in a high-stakes mission to save the day, showcasing the impulsive and occasionally hormone-fuelled nature of this new generation of Starfleet hopefuls.

While the series pays homage to the rich history of the Star Trek franchise, it also carves out its own unique identity, blending the classic tropes of the sci-fi saga with a more youthful, high-energy sensibility. The return of fan-favourite characters, such as the grumpy hologram teacher played by Robert Picardo, adds a delightful touch of nostalgia for long-time Trekkies.

Starfleet Academy is a thrilling and engaging addition to the Star Trek universe, offering a fresh perspective on the iconic franchise while staying true to its core values of exploration, discovery, and the triumph of the human spirit. With its captivating characters, high-stakes missions, and a touch of Grange Hill-esque charm, this series is sure to delight both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
