As urban development continues to encroach on forested areas, ticks find more opportunities to flourish. “Mowing down forests and establishing suburbs on previously wooded land creates ideal environments for ticks,” explains Lloyd. This habitat shift has inadvertently supported larger populations of mice, which are known carriers of Lyme disease, and other wildlife that ticks feed on.
Statistics paint a grim picture: Lyme disease cases in the US surged by 69% in 2022 compared to the average from 2017 to 2019. In England, reports of Lyme disease rose by over 20% between 2024 and 2025. “The pathogens are expanding almost exclusively because of human changes in how we live in the environment,” Lloyd warns.
How to Protect Yourself from Ticks
With tick bites becoming more frequent, it’s essential to know how to check for these bloodsuckers. Ticks tend to inhabit moist, shaded areas like leaf litter and tall grasses. When they’re hungry, they climb up blades of grass, hoping to latch onto unsuspecting passersby.
If a tick does find its way onto your body, it will gravitate towards dark, damp areas such as the backs of knees and the groin. It’s crucial to conduct a tick check after spending time outdoors. Showering immediately can help wash away any ticks before they attach. When checking for ticks, look for small bumps that may feel like poppy seeds or, if they’ve fed, can swell to the size of blueberries.
Prompt removal of a tick is key. Experts recommend using fine-tip tweezers to grasp the tick close to its head and pull upwards with steady pressure, ensuring no body parts are left behind in the skin.
What to Do if You’re Bitten
If you discover a tick has bitten you, remain calm. Follow the removal steps carefully, then wash the bite site and your hands thoroughly with soap and water. It’s advisable to save the tick in a sealed bag in your freezer, noting its date and location. This can be helpful if you develop symptoms later, such as fever or a rash, which may indicate Lyme disease.
Consult your healthcare provider after a tick bite. They may recommend a single dose of doxycycline as a prophylactic measure against Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections. Regularly mowing your lawn and trimming back dense vegetation can reduce tick habitats significantly. Installing tick tubes—cardboard tubes filled with permethrin-treated cotton—can help control tick populations by targeting rodents that may carry them.
Pet owners should be particularly vigilant, as pets can transport ticks indoors. Regularly checking dogs for ticks and grooming them before they enter the house can help mitigate this risk.
