Mayor Adam Hall reported that approximately 20 cm (8 inches) of rain fell in the area, leading to significant flooding that prompted a state of emergency, which was officially lifted on July 5. Recovery Efforts Underway
The floodwaters have largely subsided, particularly around the commercial areas south of the railway tracks, where pockets of water remain but are gradually dissipating. Mayor Hall noted, “The water that was south of the tracks has mostly receded around the businesses there… the creeks are full and flowing, but they’re going where they’re supposed to be going, which is good.” However, he cautioned that the aftermath would require considerable time and effort to address thoroughly.
The clean-up is expected to stretch over several months, with both local residents and businesses working tirelessly to restore normalcy. Tofield has received substantial assistance from CN, which provided six industrial pumps to aid in the recovery operations, as well as support from neighbouring communities.

Hall mentioned, “There are a few roads that needed to be fixed that head out to the lagoon, but here in town, it’s mostly just local businesses and residents that are cleaning up.” The damage was primarily concentrated on a walking trail and some rural roads, but the town’s core infrastructure remains intact.
One notable business impacted was Tofield Packers, surrounded by floodwaters during the peak of the storm. Owner Jill Lungal recounted the frantic efforts to fortify the facility, stating, “We had sandbags all the way around our building… trying just to keep it out of the building.” Her family and community members rallied together, successfully preventing significant damage to the interior of the meat-packing plant.

Lungal expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from friends, family, and community members who showed up with pumps, sandbags, and a willingness to help. “It’s a miracle our building is okay,” she said, reflecting the resilience and unity that Tofield residents have demonstrated in the face of adversity.
After health inspectors deemed the facility safe, Tofield Packers was able to resume operations within a few days. While the parking lot suffered some damage, Lungal emphasised that it was a minor inconvenience compared to the potential devastation that could have occurred.

Looking ahead, Mayor Hall is already engaging in discussions about preventative measures to mitigate the risk of future flooding. Potential strategies include the installation of culverts and other infrastructure improvements. “We definitely need to look at changes to our infrastructure,” he stated, underscoring the importance of proactive measures to protect the community.
